Thisinvention relates generally'to extension tables and more specifically to an extension table wherein the 'auxiliary leaves,` each operating independently, are normally concealed on each side 5 of the table top and when either one or both are fully extended brings about a lowering of the table topA to conform with the plane of the leaf or leaves; i
Themain object of the invention resides in the v provision of an extension table whereby the auxiliary leaves are adapted to be separately extended with the minimum amount of effort and whereby when the `said leaves either together or singly have been extended to their limiting position,
novel means are provided to maintain the table top in elevated position until each leaf has been automatically retracted.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of spring means to cause automatic retracting -of each'leaf when either one is tilted above the normal level when in extendedv position.
-Further objects, of the invention reside in the economy and simplicity of construction and simplicityof operation.
These objects andV other incidental ends and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear vin the progress of the disclosure and as pointedout inthe appended claims.
Accompanying this specification are drawings showing a preferred form of the invention wherein corresponding reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein:

In accordance with the invention and in accordance with a preferred form thereof shown in the-drawings, there is provided a liftable table top I0 having a thickened periphery I0. The inner surface of table top III is provided with a transverse cross bar member 3S intermediate the ,4 length 4of the said table top IIJ. The framework 6i for the table top I9 comprises two transverse end wall members I I and two lateral longitudinal wall members I2; table legs I3 depending from the intersections of the said wall members. The frame- ,l work is provided with a longitudinal member I4 10' intermediate the width thereof and is supported by the upper edges of end wall members II, the upper edgesof the end wall members II and I2 also supporting the auxiliary leaf members II-I l. Leaf members I'I-I'I normally are concealed be- I5 low table top I and are disposed on each side of member I4 the edges of the latter serving as the inner limits of the said leaf members Il--I'I. Member I4 proximate to each end is provided with upwardlyprojecting pins I5 which are received 20 in sockets I6 provided by block members I6. depending from the undersurface of table top IU. Thus, table top III can be removed from the frame work by lifting the same off pins I5.
Leaf membersV I'I-Il are adapted to project 25 from the framework When in extended position and are therefore provided with angular sliding supports. Thus one leaf is provided with two similar spaced angular sliding supports I8, I9 and the other leaf is provided with two similar spaced angular supports 20 and 2I. 'Ihe said supports penetrate notches I2 situated at the upper portions of the longitudinal wall members I2. The leaf members are aflixed to the offset portions of the upper edge of the angular supports, the said 35 offset portions being in a horizontal plane when the leaf members are in fully extended position as shown in Figure '7. When the leaf members II-I 'I are in fully extended position, the angular supports intermediate the length rest on the bot- 40 torn of the notches I2 while the lower ends of the said angular supports are provided with stops. 'Ihus angular supports I8 and I9 are provided with end stops 22 and 23 respectively while angular supports 29 and 2I are provided with end stops 45 24 and 25 respectively. These stops engage with bars depending from the undersurface of member I4. Thus, stop 22 engages with bar 29, stop 23 engages with bar 35, stop 24 engages with bar 30 and stop 25 engages with bar 34. Bar 29 is 50 supported by spaced plates 26, 21 depending from member I4, bar 30 is supported by spaced plates 2l and 28, bar 35 is supported by spaced plates 32,
33 and bar 34 is supported by spaced plates 3| and 32. 55
Thus, when leaf members I1-I'I are in projected position, the said members are level being supported by the angular supports, the latter resting at the base of notches I2 and on the bars above mentioned. It is to be observed that while either leaf I'I is being extended toward the limiting projected position, the table top I' is tilted upwardly thereat since the leaf` rises by virtue of the rise in the angular support against the base of notch I2. When the leaf is in fully projected position, the level thereof is above the level when in retracted or normally concealed position as shown in Figures 2 and 3. During projection of the leaf toward its limiting and extended position, the table top I0 rst tilts and then falls to therlevelof the leaf when the latter has reached'nal limiting position. When either one or both leaves is in fully projected' position, table top IIJ rests on the same angular supports as the extended leaf or leaves.
Intermediate the length of the leaf members Il-I'I are pins 40 and 4I depending from the undersurface and near the outer edges, the said pins having secured thereto tension springs 38 and 39, the opposite ends of the said tension springs 33 and 39 being secured to a pin 31 depending `from the undersurface of member I4 and intermediate the length thereof.
Transverse cross bar member `36 near each abutment with the thickened periphery I0' of the ta'ble top I!) is provided with brackets 43 and 44, the said brackets being provided with a coil spring mounting 45. One arm of each bracket is provided with a squareseat 44A', while the other arm is inwardly turnedk as at 44, the said arms being disposed free of the transverse cross bar member Y36. The turn '44 abuts against the undersu'rface of cross bar member 36 thereby preventing seat 44 from touching the undersurface of table top Il). The arms of brackets l43 and l44'are normally pushed downwardly by the action of spring 45.
Thus, when leaf members I'I-I'l are in normal and concealed position, brackets 43 and 44 rest on the upper surfaces of the leaf members. While the leaf members are projected to 'limiting position, table top Iil falls, guided by pins I5 and becomes Vcoplanar with the upper surface of leaf'members "I1-I1. If either leaf member is raised when Sin projected position, as shown in Figure 3, the angular supports I8 and I9 Vbecome free Vof the bottom of notch I2', while the said supports also raise table top I0. Bracket 44 at the seat and inwardly turned portion 44 immediately engages the uper edge of the longitudinal of notches I2. The tension of spring 39 will then draw leaf I1 inwardly. The inner edge of leaf I'l in the depressed condition will force bracket 44 against the action of spring 45 and thereby would normally cause a gradual lowering of table top I0. But such lowering is delayed by virtue of a bottom heavy and centrally pivoted finger 48, pivoting on axis 46, the said axis being affixed to the transverse wall I I as shown in the drawings. A similar finger 49 on `pivot 4l is provided on the opposite transverse wall diametrically opposite.
Thus it is seen that brackets 43 and 44 and fingers 48 and 49 practically eliminate surface friction between the upper surfaces of leaf members Il-II and the undersurface of table top when retracting 'the leaf members from projected positions.
I wish it undertsood that minor changes and variations in the material, integration of parts, location and subcombination of the several parts cf the construction may all ebe resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and without departing from the scope of the apended claims.
I claim: y
1. In an extension table, a. liftably removable table top, an auxiliary leaf normally concealed in the side of said table top and oppositely movable therefrom when projecting the same, supporting arms for the said extension leaf, the said arms being movable and adapted to bring the table top to the planev of the leaf when the latter is f-ully projected, a spring actuated bracket secured to the underside of the table top and adapted to maintain a momentary elevation induced by a'lifting of the leaf and table top when the leaf is in fully projected position, and automatic means to retract the projected Aleaf when in the aforesaid condition of elevation.
`2. In an extension table, a liftably removable table top, an auxiliary leaf normally concealed in the side of said table top and oppositely movable therefrom when projecting the same, supporting arms for the said extension leaf, the said arms 'being .movable and adapted to bring the table top to the plane of the kleaf' when the latter is fully projected, a bracket secured to the underside of the table top and adapted to maintain a momentary elevation of both the table top and the leaf induced byfa lifting of the leaf and table top -when the leaf is in fully projected position, automatic means to retract the projected leaf when in the aforesaid condition of elevation, and means to reduce friction between the underside of the table top and the upper surface of the leaf during the act of retraction.
