Definitions
- This specification relates generally to support devices. More particularly, the disclosure pertains to pillows that are adjustable by a user.
- Pillows are often used to support a head or other parts of a user's body during sleeping or resting. For example, pillows may be employed while sleeping on a bed or resting on a couch or chair.
- Pillows typically consist of a sealed fabric envelope having a soft stuffing or filling therein, such as down feathers or synthetic foam.
- the fabric envelope is typically covered with a pillowcase made of a cloth material.
- a pillow should help keep a user's head in a neutral alignment, where the user's head is positioned squarely on their shoulders—without bending back too far or reaching too far forward.
- a back sleeper requires a thinner pillow, so their head is not pushed too far forward.
- a side sleepers needs a firmer pillow to fill in the distance between their ear and shoulder.
- a stomach sleeper may require a very thin, almost flat pillow for proper head alignment.
- conventional pillows are not adjustable.
- the fabric envelope is typically sealed such that a user may not access the filler material contained therein. Accordingly, a user of these pillows may need to purchase a new pillow if they change their sleeping position preference any time after a pillow purchase.
- the filler material in conventional pillows may flatten, wear or weaken over time, resulting in a pillow that lacks proper support.
- an adjustable pillow that allows for a user to add or remove an amount of internal filling to increase or decrease the size of the pillow, or adjust the shape thereof. It would be beneficial if such a pillow allowed for easy, yet secure, opening and closing of an inner container that holds a filler material.
- adjustable pillows are disclosed herein.
- the adjustable pillows are adapted to hold a variable amount of filler material, the amount adjustable by a user such that the shape and/or size of the pillows may be manipulated as desired or required.
- the pillow may include an inner cover disposed within an outer cover.
- the outer cover may include an aperture, or opening, sized to allow the insertion and/or removal of the inner cover therewithin.
- the aperture may be closed by a fastening mechanism, such as a zipper.
- the pillow may further include a filler material disposed within the inner cover and the inner cover may include an aperture sized to allow the insertion and/or removal of such filler material.
- the inner cover aperture may be closed by a fastening mechanism, such as a zipper.
- the pillow may comprise various sizes to conform to the body of an individual using the pillow.
- an adjustable pillow may include an outer cover having a plurality of panels joined to form an outer surface, an inner surface and an interior compartment sized to house an inner cover therein.
- the outer cover may also include a closable aperture extending from the outer surface to the inner surface along one or more of the panels, where the aperture is sized to receive the inner cover therein.
- a fastening mechanism may be present on the outer cover and such fastening mechanism may be adapted to allow a user to open the aperture for insertion of the inner cover into the interior compartment and/or securely close the aperture such that the inner cover remains within the interior compartment during use.
- the adjustable pillow may further include an inner cover disposed within the interior compartment of the outer cover.
- the inner cover may include: a plurality of panels joined to form an outer surface, an inner surface and an interior compartment sized to house an amount of a filler material therein; a closable aperture extending from the outer surface to the inner surface along one or more of the panels, the aperture sized to receive the filler material therein; and/or a fastening mechanism in communication with the aperture.
- the fastening mechanism may be adapted to allow a user to open the aperture for insertion of the filler material into the interior compartment of the inner cover; and/or securely close the aperture such that the filler material remains within the interior compartment during use.

Description
- The present application claims benefit of priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 62/295,243, titled “Fillable Pillow,” filed Feb. 15, 2016, which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.
Pillows typically consist of a sealed fabric envelope having a soft stuffing or filling therein, such as down feathers or synthetic foam. The fabric envelope is typically covered with a pillowcase made of a cloth material.
- Experts agree that the use of an appropriate pillow for sleeping is critical for good health. An incorrectly sized or shaped pillow may cause or exacerbate headaches, neck pain, arm numbness, breathing problems and/or sneezing.
- Ideally, a pillow should help keep a user's head in a neutral alignment, where the user's head is positioned squarely on their shoulders—without bending back too far or reaching too far forward. A back sleeper requires a thinner pillow, so their head is not pushed too far forward. A side sleepers needs a firmer pillow to fill in the distance between their ear and shoulder. And a stomach sleeper may require a very thin, almost flat pillow for proper head alignment.
- Unfortunately, conventional pillows are not adjustable. The fabric envelope is typically sealed such that a user may not access the filler material contained therein. Accordingly, a user of these pillows may need to purchase a new pillow if they change their sleeping position preference any time after a pillow purchase. Moreover, the filler material in conventional pillows may flatten, wear or weaken over time, resulting in a pillow that lacks proper support.
- There is therefore a need for an adjustable pillow that allows for a user to add or remove an amount of internal filling to increase or decrease the size of the pillow, or adjust the shape thereof. It would be beneficial if such a pillow allowed for easy, yet secure, opening and closing of an inner container that holds a filler material.
- In accordance with the foregoing objectives and others, exemplary adjustable pillows are disclosed herein. The adjustable pillows are adapted to hold a variable amount of filler material, the amount adjustable by a user such that the shape and/or size of the pillows may be manipulated as desired or required.
- The pillow may include an inner cover disposed within an outer cover. Accordingly, the outer cover may include an aperture, or opening, sized to allow the insertion and/or removal of the inner cover therewithin. The aperture may be closed by a fastening mechanism, such as a zipper. The pillow may further include a filler material disposed within the inner cover and the inner cover may include an aperture sized to allow the insertion and/or removal of such filler material. The inner cover aperture may be closed by a fastening mechanism, such as a zipper. The pillow may comprise various sizes to conform to the body of an individual using the pillow.
- In one embodiment, an adjustable pillow is provided. The adjustable pillow may include an outer cover having a plurality of panels joined to form an outer surface, an inner surface and an interior compartment sized to house an inner cover therein. The outer cover may also include a closable aperture extending from the outer surface to the inner surface along one or more of the panels, where the aperture is sized to receive the inner cover therein. A fastening mechanism may be present on the outer cover and such fastening mechanism may be adapted to allow a user to open the aperture for insertion of the inner cover into the interior compartment and/or securely close the aperture such that the inner cover remains within the interior compartment during use. The adjustable pillow may further include an inner cover disposed within the interior compartment of the outer cover. The inner cover may include: a plurality of panels joined to form an outer surface, an inner surface and an interior compartment sized to house an amount of a filler material therein; a closable aperture extending from the outer surface to the inner surface along one or more of the panels, the aperture sized to receive the filler material therein; and/or a fastening mechanism in communication with the aperture. The fastening mechanism may be adapted to allow a user to open the aperture for insertion of the filler material into the interior compartment of the inner cover; and/or securely close the aperture such that the filler material remains within the interior compartment during use.
- The details of one or more embodiments of the subject matter of this specification are set forth in the accompanying drawings and the description below. Other features, aspects, and advantages of the subject matter will become apparent from the description, the drawings, and the claims.
