1 Claim.

This invention relates to folding lawn or camp chairs, the primary object of the invention being to provide a chair which may be adjusted to various angles, for the comfort of the user, and one which when folded, will require small space for storing, and at the same time provide a chair which may be readily and easily transported.

Another object of the invention is the provision of means for adjusting the seat portion of the chair, or pivoted supporting frame, independently of each other, thereby providing a chair of unlimited adjustment.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a chair wherein the leg portions of the frame thereof, are provided with feet, adapted to be embedded in the ground surface on which the chair is resting, to hold the chair in various positions of adjustment.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a chair constructed in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating the device when used as a back rest.

Figure 4 is a fragmental front elevational view thereof.

Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the device when spread to its limit.

Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the device in its folded condition.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the chair forming the subject matter of this invention, comprises a main frame section 5, and a supporting frame section 6, the frame section 6 being pivotally connected with the main frame section 5, so that it may be swung to various angles with respect to the main frame section, supporting the main frame section in various positions of adjustment.

The main frame section embodies side bars 7 and 8, which are connected at their upper ends, by means of the cross bars 9 and 10, the cross bars 9 and 10 being spaced apart as clearly shown by the drawings.

Elongated openings 11 are formed in the cross bars 9 and 10, through which openings the canvas strip 12 is extended, the ends of the canvas strip being sewed together, to provide the back for the chair.

The reference character 13 designates a cross bar that connects the lower end of the side bars 5 7 and 8, the side bars 7 and 8 being provided with openings to receive tongues 14 extending from the ends of the cross bar 13, the tongues being bent over the bars 7 and 8, securing the bar 13 in position.

The cross bars 9 and 10 are also formed with tongues that extend through openings in the side bars '7 and 8, which tongues are bent into engagement with the side bars.

As clearly shown by the drawings, the lower 15 ends of the side bars 7 and 8, extend laterally at 15, and downwardly at 16, the extremity of the side bars '7 and 8 being tapered, so that they may be forced into the ground surface.

The laterally extended portions 15 provide 20 shoulders that rest on the ground surface, and prevent the extremities of the side bars 7 and 8, from passing too far into the ground surface.

The reference character 17 designates the seat portion of the chair, which is provided with a 25 supporting rod 18, that has its ends positioned within openings formed in the side bars 7 and 8, pivotally supporting the seat portion, between the side bars.

Notched bars 19 are secured to the under sur- 30 face of the chair seat portion 17, the notches of the bars cooperating with the pivoted brace 20, that has its end extended at right angles and disposed within openings, formed in the side bars 7 and 8, near the lower ends thereof.

Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the seat portion may be adjusted to various angles with respect to the side bars of the frame for the comfort of the user.

The seat portion of the chair is adapted to 40 swing to a position between the side bars 7 and 8, to the end that the device may be used as a back rest.

When the seat portion is in this position, it rests against the ears 21, that are stamped from 45 the side bars 7 and 8, and extend inwardly therefrom.

A clip or keeper indicated at 22, is secured to the seat portion of the chair, and is disposed in such a position that the pivoted brace 20 may 5 rest therein, and be held out of the way.

The supporting frame of the chair includes side bars 23 which are pivotally connected to the side bars 7 and 8, at 24, the lower ends of the side bars 23 being offset at 25 and extended downwardly, providing tapered extensions 26, that are embedded in the ground surface, to hold the supporting frame section, against movement.

Cross bars 2''! and 28 connect the side bars 23, and hold the side bars in proper spaced relation with respect to each other, at all times.

Secured to the side bars '7 and 8, are stops 29 that engage the side bars 23, when the supporting frame section is moved to the limit of its outward movement, and when the chair is used by a person wishing to lie on his back.

From the foregoing disclosure, it is believed that a further detailed disclosure of the operation of the device is unnecessary, .for a clear understanding of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

A combined chair and back rest, comprising a main frame section embodying side bars, the lower ends of the side bars being extended laterally and downwardly, a supporting section including side bars, pivotally connected to the main section, a seat portion pivotally mounted on the main frame, detachable means supporting the seat in horizontal position, means limiting the swinging movement of the seat when folded, whereby the seat is converted into a back rest, and means for limiting movement of the sections with respect to each other.
