Description
F. RoBlNsoN Jan. 8, 1935.
MATTRESS Filed June 20. 1954 Patented Jan. 8, 1935 y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE zclaims.
This invention relates to mattresses and, more particularly, to improved means for securing various types of coverings thereon.
It is one of the objects of the invention to provide a mattress with means for readily and conveniently and detachably securing rubber sheeting or other form of covering to either side of the mattress so that the covering will be held in a perfectly smooth condition and thus meet therequirements for hospital beds, childrens beds, etc.
A further object of the invention is to provide convenient means for detachably securing a blanket, spread, or other form of cover, to either side of the mattress so that the cover will be held securelyin position and a child or hospital patient or anyone using the mattress cannot become uncovered by moving around thereon. -A further object is to provide, incombination with detachable'means for securing a cover, as just described, additional means for securing a sheet or pad on either side of the mattress so that it will be held in a smooth condition thereon and without in any way interfering with the reversibility of the mattress or the means for attaching the outer cover thereto as described. r
A further object of the invention is to provide a reversible mattress for a childs crib with convenient means for attaching a cover thereto, said means being` so arranged that the cover may be attached and secured in position without the4 inconvenience of tuck'ing the cover down along the sides of the mattress.
Other objects of the invention and the features of novelty will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, of which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1:
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side view of a mattress having a sheet attached thereto, in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, represents an ordinary mattress of any suitable construction and,
in applying my invention thereto, I provide flaps 11 and 12 along the longitudinal edges oi the mattress, these iiaps being secured at the mid-plane of the edges as indicated at 13. The iiaps 11 and 12 preferably extend along the longitudinal edges of the mattress for a distance somewhat more than one-half the length of the mattress, starting from the foot thereof, as best shown in Fig. 1, and the-free edges of these naps are preferably provided with fully detachable zipper-type fasteners,
as indicated at 14, for the purpose of securing a' cover l5. It will be noted that the width of the flaps 11 and 12 is substantially one-half the thickness of the mattress so that the mattress will be 5 reversible to permit'either side thereof to be used and, at the same time, have the zipper-type fasteners arranged at the upper corners of the 1ongitudinal edges of the mattress to make it convenient to attach and detach the cover 15 when 10 the mattress is in position inthe childs crib, having the usual bars or slats which are vertically arranged along the edges of the mattress and extend for some distance thereabove.
Reinforcing strips orl tapes 16 are arranged in l5 spaced relation along the longitudinal edges of the mattress and have buttons or snap fasteners 17 thereon to which the edges of a. sheet 18 may be conveniently attached for the purpose of securing the sheet in a perfectly smooth condition 20 on the top of the mattress without liability for it to become wrinkled in use.- The sheet 18 may be rubber sheeting or a pad or any other suitable form of cover such as is commonly applied directly on the surface of theL mattress. It will be noted that the buttons or fasteners 17 are symmetrically arranged on opposite sides of the ilaps 11 and 12 so that the sheet 18 may be applied to and secured on either surface of the mattress, thus making the mattress fully reversible. It will also be noted that the means for securing the sheet 18 in no wise interferes with the ilaps 11 and 12 or the means for securing the cover 15 to these flaps.
If preferred, the sheet 18 may also be secured at the ends of the mattress in the same manner l that it is secured along the longitudinal edges but, ordinarily, it will be sulcient to simply secure the sheet along its longitudinal edges.
For hospital beds, it is usually unnecessary to provide means for securing the top cover or covers, such as 15, and only necessary to secure a rubber or other form of sheet over the top surface of the mattress and, in such cases, I prefer to' use the construction illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 in which the ilaps 19 and 20 are secured along f the longitudinal edges of the mattress and at the mid-plane thereof and preferably extend the full length of the mattress. In this construction, I also prefer to use fully detachable zipper-type fasteners 21 along the free edges of the flaps for I the purpose of securing the sheet 22. In this construction, it will be noted that the flaps 19 and 20 are of suillcient width to permit the mattress to be reversed and the sheet 22 applied to either side thereof.
While, in the illustrations of my invention, I have shown as my preferred construction the well-known, fully detachable zipper-type fasteners, it will be understood that any other form of fastening means, such as buttons or snap fasteners, might be used instead, and a suicient number of buttons or snap fasteners may be used to securelyv hold the sheet 22 in a smooth and unwrinkled condition.
While I have illustrated and described what I now consider to be the preferred embodiments of my invention it will be understood that various changes will be made from the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. A reversible mattress having aps secured along opposite edges thereof substantially midway between the top and bottom of the mattress and of a width substantially equal to one-half the thickns of the mattress whereby the free longitudinal edges of the flaps are adapted to be positioned at the upper or lower corners of the mattress, a cover for the mattress adapted to be positioned on either side thereof, and opposite edges of said cover and the free edges of said aps having cooperating detachable fastening means whereby the cover may be retained in position on either side of the mattress.
2. A reversible mattress having flaps secured along opposite edges thereof substantially midway between the top and bottom of the mattress, said flaps being of suiiicient width to permit the free edges thereof to lie adjacent to either the top or bottom surface of the mattress, a cover for the mattresseadapted to be positioned on either side thereof, and opposite edges .of said cover and the free edges of said aps being provided with cooperating detachable fastening means whereby the cover may be secured in a substantially smooth condition on either side of the mattress.
