HAMILTON COMBINED TYPEWRITER STAND AND DESK Filed March 19, 1931 Patented Oct. 10, 1933 Unirse STATES y 1,929,551 COMBINED TYPEWRITER STAND AND 'DESK George H.,Hamilton, East Grand Rapids, Mich., assignor to American Seating Company, Grand Rapids7 Mich., a corporation of New Jersey Application March 19, 1931. Serial No. 523,717
1 claim. (c1. 45-91) The present invention relates to desks and more particularly to vtypewriter desks designed for use by typists and stenographers.
The main objects of the invention are to provide a typewriter stand having a top which serves as a combined desk and cover which may be lifted and swung rearwardly when the typewriter is being used; torprcvide such 'a'structure whose -top provides a desk when the typewriter is not in use; and to provide a structure of the character above specified` which is neat in appearance, highly utilitarian in use, and economical to produce. f
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the desk and its attached chainshowing the top swung rearwardly, the dotted lines indicating the position to which the top may be lowered and retained when the typewriter Vis being used;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view showing in dotted lines the position assumed by the top in its initial tilting movement and thereafter in its retained lower position:
Figure 3 is a fragmentary View partly in section, showing Athe top in its retained position; showing the top in its retained lower position; and Y Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of the slot in' which the pivot pin travels and is retained.
Referring to. the drawing in which like numerals designate the same parts in the several views, the combined stand and desk is adjustably supported for height by the vertically disposed tubular member 1 which telescopes with the tubular member 2. A clamp 3 isprovided for adjusting the height of the combined stand and desk and a U-shaped member 4 having laterally projecting oppositely disposed legs 5 at its opposite ends is spot welded or otherwise suitably secured to the tubular member 2 at one end and to the tubular member 6 at its other end. The tubular member 6 fadjustably telescopes with the tubular member 7 and the clamp 8 is provided for adjustingy the height of the chair 9 which is provided with a back 10.
A horizontally disposed stand 11 forsupporting a typewriter, not shown, is provided with a back 12 and a pair. of rearwardly disposed laterally projecting pivot pins 13. A cover 14 for the stand has an inclined desk portion 15, depending front portion 16 and depending side portions 17 which form a closure for the typewriter supporting stand when the desk cover is in its closed position. oppositely disposed pins are adapted to travel whereby the desk is blocks 18 secured to the inner lower rfront end of the side portions 1 7 are adapted to rest on the upper side of thestand 11 for supporting the forward end of the desk cover 14 when the typewriter is not being used.
Suitably secured to the side members 11 to their respective inner surfaces is a pair of plates 19 having L-shaped slots 20. The pivot pins 13 register with these slots and are retained Vand are adapted to travel therein.
In actual use, the top 14 forms a combined y cover for the typewriter and a desk. This top v is hingedly mounted by `means of the pivot pins 13 which are retained and are adapted to travel in the slots 20. The top may be tilted rearwardly until it assumes a vertical position as shown in full lines in Figure 1 at which time it may be slid forwardly andpermitted to drop toV theY retainedV position shown in dotted lines in Figurek 1. In this position the typewriter may be used while, when the top is returned tothe position shown in full lines in Figure 2, the top may be used as a desk.
It will thus be seen that a combined desk and typewriter stand is herein shown and described in which the desk portion serves'as a cover for the stand when the typewriter is not in use yet which can be readily tilted rearwardly when it is desired to use the typewriter.
While but one specific Vembodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claim.
A I claim: l
The combination with -a horizontally disposed stand having an upwardly extending portion forming a back, said stand provided with apair of rearwardly disposed laterally yprojecting pins, of -a desk having depending sideand front portions forming a`cover for saidstand, said. desk having a pair of linear oppositely disposed slots registering with said pins and in which the tilted rearwardly and droppedto retained open position.
GEORGE I-I.` HAMILTON.
