This invention relates to a jack Or pushing aparatus, the general object of the invention being to provide a telescopic jack, with means for quickly moving the parts to a position where the jack will engage the object to be lifted when the full lifting effect of the jack will come into action to lift the object.
Another object of the invention is to provide frictional means for holding the screw parts against turning movement, with means for permitting such means to yield when necessary to prevent damage to the parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide a telescopic member for preventing rotation of the inner screw, with means for moving said member into inoperative position when said inner screw is to be returned to normal position.
Still another Object of the invention is to provide a jack having a driving member centrally mounted in the housing and having means formed in the base of the housing upon which the driving member is journaled for maintaining'the driving member in co-aXial alignment in the housing.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a jack of the class described, means for holding a projectable member of the jack from rotation so that the same may be automatically eXtended from the jack housing when the device is Operated, and 'including a spring actuated dog Clutch releasable in either direction to prevent 'damage to the j ack parts when the eXtensible member is in fully eXtended and fully collapsed position.
Still another Object of my invention is to provide in a j ack of the class described, means for normally preventing rotation of an eXtensible member whereby the same may be automatically projected upon operation of the jack, and which means is manually operable, as by inverting the ack, to permit rotation of the eXtensible member whereby the same may be rapidly run back to its normal position by hand and without operating the driving mechanism of the device.

preferably through means of a depen ding part i of a cup-shaped member 5 which is fastened to the base by the screw 6 or the like, the gear being rotatably mounted on said part i with the cup shaped part above the gear. This gear has formed therewith an upright tubular part 7 which is provided with internal screw threads 8 at its upp-er end. The casing 2 rotatably supports the member 7. A pinion 9, mounted on a Stub shaft 10 which is journaled in the lower part of the casing 2, meshes with the gear. A handle, such as shown at 11 in Fioure 1, may be-detachably connected with tne Stub shaft. An outer screw member 12 fits within the part 7 and has its exterior threads 13 engaging the threads 8 and this part 12 is provided with in- ]eCt to be lifted, A ring 18 is carried by the A gear 3 is rota'tably mounted on the base,

A Washer or disk 19 is arranged in the Cup-shaped member 5 and a coiled spring 20 has its lower end Testing upon said disk or Washer and its upper end engages the upper portion of the member 12, said spring applying pressure 'to both the member 12 and to the disk or washer 19.
In the modification shown in Figure T, the tubular part 7' is located within the outer screW 12' and said part 7' is thre-aded over its entire extent. The part 12' is interiorly threaded at its lOWer end and these threads mesh With the threads of the part 7'. n other respecte, this form of the invention is similar to that above described.
As Will be seen, the threads of the parts are Such as to give the outer screw 12 a quick rectilinear movement When the gear 3 and its part 7 are rotated, while the inner screW has a SloWer movement When the same is moved relative to the outer screW 12 through rotation of said outer screW.
With the parts in lowered position and the pinion 9 rotated by the handle 11 thr ugh the medium of the Stub Shaft 10. the gear 3 Will be rotated and the rotary movement of the gear 3 and its part 7 Will cause the outer screW 12 to move upwardly very quickly. As the inner screw 16 is held against movement by its telescopic key, the disk 19 and cup-shaped member 5, the inn-er screw Will move upwardly with th outer screw. The spring 20 acts to prevent rotary movement of the outer sCreW 12. A soon as the load comes upon the saddle 17, however, the Weight increases friction on the threads of the outer screW 12 and the part T so that said part 12 Will rotate With the part 7, and as the inner screw 10 is held against rotary movement by the load, said inner screw Will be fed upivardly through the outer sCreW 12. `When the parts are to be returned to normal position the jack can be turned upside doWr` and the inner screv. 16 is turned, so that the pin 30 Will drop below the hooks 31 of the disk 19, Which Will permit the inner screfiv to be rotated until it is returned toits retracted position Within the outer screW 12. If any strain should come upon the parts, the disk' would rotate Within the cup-shaped member, the ribs 22 riding over the ribs 21 and thus preventing damage to the parts. The ribbed parts thus form astrain relieving Clutch, the ribs being of rounded configuration as indicated in Figure 8 of the drawings whereby to permit the ribs to ride the one over the other, as aforesaid.
As Will be seen, the load Will come on the saddle and on the part- 3, close to the center, and by making 'the parts 3 and 'i in one piece the cost of manufacture is reduced. By making the key telescopic, there is no interference of this key With the longitudinal movement of the inner screiv and the coiled spring tends to move the outer screW upwardly and also keeps it from rotating until the load comes on the inner screw. This spring also places the tension on the disk and holds it against rotation, but permits it to rotate under undue strain by allowing' the ribs 22 to ride over the ribs 21. The clutch arrangement between the telescopic key and the disk 19 permits the inner screw to be quickly run back to its normal position.
It is thought from the foregoinp; description that the advantages and nov-el features of my invention Will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of' the several parts provided that such changes fall Within the scopo of the appended Claims.

A device of the class described comprising a housing acylindrical threaded member rotatably inounted tiereim means for rotating the same. an outer screw having its threads engaging the threads of said cylindrical member, an inner screw threaded in the outer screw, means for holding the inner screv against turning about its aXis Without interfering With the rectilinear movement thereof, said means including a telescopic key having connection With the inner screW, cooperating means mounted on the frame and tending to prevent rotary movement of the key in one direction, and yieldable means for holding the co-operating means in operative position.

A device of the class described comprising a housing, a cylindrical threaded member rotatably mounted therein, means for rotating the same, an outer screw having its threads engaging the threads of said cylindrical member, an inner screw threaded in the Outer screW, means for holding the inner sCreW against turning about its aXis Without interfering With the rectilinear movement thereof, said means including a telescopic key having connection With the inner screw cooperating means tending to prevent rotary movement of the key in one direction, a pin carried by the key and detachably connecting one of the cooperating means, and yieldable holding means for the cooperating means.

A device of the class described comprisin a housing, a eylindrcal threaded member rotatably mounted therein, means for rotating the same, an outer screW having its threads engaging the threads of said Cylindreal member, an inner screW threaded in the Outer screW, a telescopic key connected With the inner screvv, a cup-shaped member connected With the bottom of the housing` and having ribs on the upper surface of its bottom, a disk in the cup-shaped member having ribs thereon engaging the before mentioned ribs, a Coiled spring having One end engaging the disk and its other end engaging a part of the outer screw, means for movably connecting the telescopic key With the disk, elutch means connecting the key With the disk, and said clutch means moving .to inoperative position When the device is turned upside down and the inner screw rotated a certain distanee in one direction.
A device of the class described comprising a housing, a cylindrical screw threaded member rotatably mounted in the housing and having a gear formed on its bottom, a pnion engaging the gear, means for rotating the pinion, an outer screvv engaging the threads of the cylindrical member, an inner screW passing through the outer screw and means tending to prevent rotary movement of the screws in one direction While permitting rectilinear movement thereof and including cooperating means, one of the cooperating means having detachable connection With respect to the inner screw, the other cooperating means having connection With the housing, and yieldable means for holding the co-operating means in operative position.
5. In a jack, a housing Comprising a tubular member and a separate cover plate forming a bottom for the tubular member, means for attaching the cover plate across the loWer end of the tubular member, driving means comprising a second tubular member rotatably and co-aXially mounted Within the first tubular member and provided With a beveled gear at its lower end, said tubular driving member being supported by the cover plate and having a central opening, said cover plate being provided With a central upstanding projection adapted to fit into the opening of the rotatable tubular member to center the same in the housing, a beveled pnion rotatably mounted in the side Walls of the first tubular member and making a driving connection With the bevel gear, a litting member having threaded connection With said driving means, a second lifting member having screW threaded connection With said first mentioned lifting member, and means for preventing relative rotation of the second lifting member in one direction with respect to the housing.

In a jaek, a housing comprising a tubular member and a cover plate forming a bottom for the tubular member, means for attaching the cover plate across the loWer end o" the tubular member, driving means comprising a second tubular member rotatably and Co-a-Xially mounted Within the first tubular member and provided With a beveled gear at its lower end, said tubular member being supported by the cover plate, said cover plate being provided With a central upstanding projection and said rotatable tubular member having a central opening forming a journal for receiving the projection, to center the rotatable tubular member in the housing, said projection comprising a Circular centralizing plug secured to the base plate by fastening means extending therethrough, a beveled pinion rotatably mounted in the side Walls of the sleeve and making a driving connection With the bevel gear, a litting member threading With said driving member, a second liftln member threaded With said first mentioned litting member, and means for preventing relative rotation in one direction of the second lifting member With respect to the housing.

In a jaek, a housing forming a base Comprising a tubular portion and a cover plate closing the lovver end of the tubular portion, means for detachably connecting the cover plate to the tubular portion, a driving member having an upstanding tubular portion internally threaded and rotatably and co-ai ially mounted Within the tubular portion of the housing, said drivin member being provided With a beveled gear, means mounted in the tubular portion of the housing and comprising a beveled pnion meshing With the bevel gear of the driving member for driving the same, said beveled gear being supported on the base plate of the housing and having a downwardly eXtending annular portion defining a ournal, a Circular plug centrally fixed to the base plate and eXte-nding upwardly thereof within said journal whereby the lower end of the driving member may be maintained in co-aXial alignment in the housing, said base plate being perforated beneath said plug and fastening means having an outwardly tapered portion eXtending through said aperture of the base plate and engaging the Circular plug to secure same in place upon the base plate, a first lifting member threaded into the internally threaded portion of the driving member, said first lifting member having a second threaded portion, and a second lifting member making screw threaded connection with said second threaded portion, and means forming a splined connection between the base and the second lifting member whereby to prevent relative rotation in one direction therebetween.

In a jack, the combination of a housing provided with a threaded driving member and interthreaded telescoping lifting members mounted within said housing for projection therefrom, one of said lifting members meshing with the thread of the driving member, means for prevent-mg rotation of the innermost of said lifting members Whereby to efl 'ect the automatic projection of at least one of said lifting members upon the operation of the driving member, said means including a clutch releasable to permit relative rotation of said innermost lifting member with respect to the base.

In a jack, the combination of a housing provided with a driving member having threaded telescoping lifting members having interthreaded parts, and mounted Within said housing for projection therefrom, one of said lifting members meshing with the thread of the driving member, means 'for preventing rota-tion of one of said lifting members whereby to efi'ect the automatic projection of at least one of Said lifting members upon the operation of the driving member, said means including a manually releasable clutch, to permit rotation of said lifting member.
10. In a jack, the Combination of a housing, a driving member, threaded telescoping lifting members having interthreaded parts and mounted Within Said housing for projection therefrom, one of said lifting members meshing With the thread of the driving member, means for preventing rotation of one of said lifting members whereby to effect the automatic projection of at least one of said li ting members upon the operation of the driving member, and a clutch operable in part by gravity to permit the free turning of at least one of said screw threaded members.

In a jack, the combination of a housing, a driving member having threaded telescoping lifting members having interthreaded parts and mounted within said housing for projection therefrom, one of said lifting members meshing With the thread of the driving member, means for preventing rotation of one of said lifting members whereby to efl'ect the automatic projection of at least one of Said lifting members upon the operation of the driving member, and a releasable clutch operable upon the inversion of the jack for permitting the free turning of at least one of said screW threaded members to permit the facile collapse of the jack.

In a jack, the combination of a housing, a driving member, thr aded telescoping lifting members having interthreaded parts and mounted within said housing for projection theretrom, one of said lifting members 'meshing with the thread of the driving member, and means for holding at least one, of said screw members from rotation during the operation of the driving member whereby to cause the automatic projection of said screW threaded lil ing members, said means including devices having interlocking parts disengageabie to permit manuel rotation of the lifting members whereby the jack may be quickly collapsed.
13. In a jack, the Combination of a housing, a driving member, threaded telescoping lifting members having interthreaded parts and mounted within said housing for projection therefrom, one of said lifting members mcshin g With the thread 01' the driving member, means for preventing rotation of one of said lifting members whereby to effect the automatic projection of at least one of said lifting members upon the operation of the driving member, said means being' manually releasable to permit the free rotation of one of said screw members for collapsing the same by hand.

A multiple screW lift jack hav'lg means for preventing rotation of a lifting member whereby to cause an automatic projection thereof upon the operation of the jack, said means including a spring pressed dog clutch releasable in either direction to prevent damage to the ack parts When the eX- tensible member is either in fully eXtended or fully collapsed position.

In a lifting jack, a housing having an upright tubular portion, driving means rotatably supported in said housing, and having a porbion formed to provide a bevel gear, means comprising a beveled pinion rotatably supported in the side Wall of said housing and having driving connection With said beveled gear portion of the driving member, said driving member having an upstanding tubular portion provided internally With screW threads, a lifting member provided With screw threads in its exterior portions, said screW threads meshing With the internally threaded portions of said driving member, a second lifting member having threaded connection With said first mentioned lifting member, means normally preventing rotation of the second lifting member during the projection thereof, said means being yieldable to permit free rotary movement of the second lifting member relative to the housing When at the Outermost limits of its Vertical travel.
19. n a lifting jacl, a housing having an upright tubular portion, driving means rotatably supported in said housing, and having a portion formed to provide a bevel gear, means comprising a. beveled pinion rotatably supported in the Wall of said housing and having drivin connection With said beveled gear portion of the driving member, said driving member having an upstanding tubular portion provided internally With screW threads, a liftingmember provided With screw threads in its exterior portions, said screW threads meshing With the internally threaded portions of said driving member, a second lifting member having threaded connection With saidrstmentionedliftingmember,andmeans for preventing relative rotation of said second lifting member With respect to the housing, said means co-operating between said second litting member and the housing and including yielding means operative at the limits of the relative aXial movement of the n testimony Whereof I afliX my Signature.
