Application filed December '19, 1924. Serial No. 756,888.
To a wlmm it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mama. G. TouMo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city. in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stoppers for containers of various kinds and is particularly designed for collapsible tubes of thin sheet metal.
The object of the'invention is to provide a closure of this character in which'the cap can be applied by direct pressure downwardly, without turning or screwing, and will be retained by the resiliency of the side walls of the cap; and which cap is pro vided with a resilient liner or plug that will be compressed at the opening in the container end and securely close the container; and which cap can be readily removed and replaced when desired on the container.
The accompanying drawing showing one embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 shows the cap about to be applied to the container.
Fig. 2 shows the cap secured on the container.
Fig. 3 is a plan view partly in section.
Fig. 4; shows the cap in elevation, broken away at the bead.
Fig. 5 shows the tube top portion.
Fig. 6 shows the liner plug.
Fig. 7 is a cross section through the tube top and cap, above the bead partly applied and flexed.
The device as shown comprises a cap 2 of the usual cylindrical form having an'end wall 3 closing the top and,- preferably a bead at the top, forming a groove 5 on the inner wall. This cap that is made of resilient metal, is provided with a bead 6. at
the lower end, as by rolling the edge of the cap. which bead extends inwardly.
The container 7 as shown is of the collapsible tube form with a rigid metal disk 8 at the top. This disk has aset of ribs 9 extending outwardly from its outer side, of which four are shown. At the bottom of each rib 9 is a groove 10 extending laterally. The disk 8 has a small bore ,11 at the upper end, that is formed somewhat conical as shown at 12. It is to be understood that the closure can be applied to any form of a the disk 8 until the grooves 10 are reached I by the bead 6 on the cap, whereupon the cap will spring inwardly to its former or normal shape, and the head will enter the grooves 10 which will permit the cap above the head to engage the outer side of the ribs above the grooves, as indicated in Fig. 1. This will cause the cap to be securely retained on the disk, but it can be withdrawn by pulling it outwardly, assisted possibly by compressing the cap inwardly at opposite sides between the ribs.
For the purpose of securely sealing the contents of the tube against escape into the cap, I provide a sealing liner or plug 13 of suitable material, such as soft rubber. This is somewhat crescent-shaped with a lower extension 14. The upper and outer margin of the plug is of a size to enter the groove 5 at the top of the.cap,'tha-t will retain the plug as a. liner in the cap, but its concave upperface will normally extend away from the top 3 of the cap a considerable distance. A slight depression or bore 15 may be formed in the upper wall of the cap at the center. The plug is so shaped that whenthe closure is applied the lower extension 14 will seat on the conical disc top 12. As the cap is pusheddown the liner will be forced toward the top 3 of the cap. This will tend to flatten the convex portion of the liner, that will be assisted by the de ression 15, and when the cap is pushed own to enga the head with the grooves, the part 14 o the liner will be very tightly pressed against the conical end 12, and securely seal the opening into the tube.
A device of the character is very simple in construction, comprising merely a cap of sheet metal, the liner plug of rubber, in connection with the "disk -8 provided withthe ribs and forth.
grooves, and also the neck as set no lVhat I claim is:
1. In combination,.a container having the neck provided with a series of upright ribs on the outer side, each rib having a lateral groove at the base, a cap of resilient metal provided with a bead at the lower edge projecting inwardly, the bore of the cap' having a diameter adapted to snugly fit the said neck at the rib portions, whereby the cap can be applied to said neck and be expanded by said ribs until the bead will reach the grooved portions of the ribs, whereupon return of the cap to normal shape will cause the bead to enter said grooves and lock the cap on the neck.
2. In combination, a container having the neck provided with a series of upright ribs on the outer side, each rib having a lateral groove at the base, a cap of rcsilent metal provided with a bead at the lower edge p'rojecting inwardly, the bore of thocap having a diameter adapted to, snugly fit the said neck at the rib portions, whereby the cap can be applied to said neck and be expanded by said ribs until the head will reach the grooved portion of the ribs, whereupon return of the cap to normal shape. will cause the bead to enter said grooves and lock the cap on the neck, a liner plug of crescent shape placed inside of: the cap engaging the upper portions of the cap, which plug compressed against the said neck on appli' cation of the cap.
3. In combination, a container having the neck provided with a series of ribs on. the outer cylindrical side, and a reduced bore at the neck extending downwardly from the upper edge, each rib having a lateral groove at the base, and a. closure cap of resilient metal provided with an annular groove in its inner wall at the top and a bead on the lower edge that projects inwardly, the bore of the cap having a diameter adapted to snugly fit said neck at opposite rib portions, whereby the cap can be applied to said neck and be expanded by said ribs until the bead will reach the grooved portions of the ribs, whereupon return of the cap to normal shape will cause the bead to cnter'said rib grooves and lock the cap on the neck, a resilient liner plug of, substantially crescent shape placed inside of the cap with its outer upper margin engaging the said groove portions of the cap, said neck being conical at the'top, said resilient plug having its lower face compressed against said neck top on application of the cap. i
4. In combination, a container having the neck provided with a series of ribs on the outer cylindrical side, and a reduced bore at the neck extending downwardly from the upper edge, each rib having a lateral groove at the base, and a closurecap of resilient metal provided with an annular groove in its inner wall at the top and'a head on the lower edge that projects inwardly, the bore of the cap having a diameter adapted to snugly fit said neck at opposite portions, whereby the cap can be applied to said neck and be expanded by said ribs until the head will reach the grooved portions of the ribs whereupon return of the cap to normal shape will cause the head. to enter said rib grooves and lock the cap on the neck, a resilient liner plug of substantially crescent shape placed inside of the cap with its outer upper margin engaging the said groove portions of the cap, said neekbeing conical at the top, said resilient plug having its lower face compressed against said top on application of the cap, said plug having a central opening at its upper face to cause compression of the plug.
