Description
R. B. MCWHIRTER EXERCISER 'Filed 15e@ l Dec. 15', 1925.
Patented Dec. 15, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT .'B. MCWHIRTER, OF NEWARK, OHIO.
EXERCISER.
Application filed December 1, 1923.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT B. Mo- Wrini'rnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and :zitate of Ohio, have invented a new and useful lxerciser, of which the following is a specilication.
'lhis invention relates to exercising ap paratus for use in the development of various muscles of the body and limbs, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a tiltable rotatable table on,r which the user is supposed to stand, the operation of maintaining the balance and of swinging the body about the support provided resulting in the exercise of the various muscles.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple and compact in construction and can be installed read- With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the ldescription proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that'changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
1n the accompanying vdrawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
in said drawings Figure l is a central vertical section through the exerciser, one of the positions of the table when tilted being indicated by broken lines.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. l.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a hollow base or pedestal adapted to be fastened to the floor by means of screws or the like extending through a base iange 2. This pedestal is provided with a fiat top 3 in which is formed a recess or depression 4 constituting a bearing for a ball 5. The ball is retained in the recess by a ring 6 having a ared opening 7, said ring being detachably secured to the pedestal by means of screws 8 or the like. f
Extending radially from the ball is a screw threaded steam 9 preferably formed Serial No. 677,998.
with a reduced neck portion 10. This stem is adjustably engaged by a sleeve 11 provided at the center of a circular table 12 having a depending rounded flange 13 at the mar- -gin thereof and concentric with the ball 5.
A portion of the sleeve projects above the center of the table into an opening 14 formed in a circular top plate or foot rest 15, there being spaced projections 16 on the table constituting recesses for this plate. A cup nut 17 engages the threaded stem and bears against the end of the sleeve 11 so as to serve as a lock nut, thereby to hold the table fixed to the stem 9 after it has been adjusted to the desired position thereon. becured on the plate 15 at diametrically opposed points are foot straps or retainers 18.
In using this apparatus `the feet of the user are inserted under the straps 18 and the user can balance himself upon the ball 5, thus requiring considerable skill as well as some effort. Another way in which the eXerciser can be used is to place it below a pair of iiying rings, a trapeze or the like. rlhe person standing on the plate 15 grasps the rings or the trapeze and swings the body in various directions, at the same time utilizing the feet to hold the plate l5 at any desired angle. It will be found in practice that various novel exercises can be performed with the aid of the apparatus herein described and said apparatus will be found very useful in developing many of the muscles. By means of the threaded stem v9, the table can be adjusted toward or from the ball.
'It will be noted that when the table is tilted to its extreme position the edge of the flange 13 will be free to roll upon the base flange 2, thus adding materially to the exercising effect of the apparatus.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a pedestal and an annular iiange thereon, of a table above the pedestal, and adjustable universal bearing connection between the top of the pedestal and the center of the table, an annular flange depending from the table for rolling engagement with the pedestal flange when the table is tilted, a foot rest supported by the table, and means for holding the feet of the user upon the foot rest.
2. The combination with a pedestal and an annular flange thereon, of a ball rotatflange when the table is tilted, a foot rest ably mounted on the pedestal, a table, a stem supported by the table and means for holdradiating from the ball adjustably engaging ing the feet of the user upon the foot rest. 1C and supporting the table, means for looking ln testimony that I cla-im the foregoing the table against rotation upon the stem, as my own, I have hereunto atlined my an annular flange depending from the table signature.
for rolling engagement with the pedestal ROBERT B. MCWHIRTER.
