G. W. EDDY.
Sewing-Machine Casters.
PIO-46,991 A 1' Patented-Feb.3.1874. v
fnl/:divin r1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. EDDY, OF NEE' BItlTAIN, ASSIGNOR TO J.'STANLEY ROOD, OF HARTFORD, AND AXE M. GOODYIN, OF PUTNAM, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT lN SEWING-MACHINE CASTERS.
Speeit :ation forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,997, dated February 3,1574; applieatfon tiled November 29, 1873.
CASE A.
To alt whom it may concern:
13e it known that I, GEORGE E'. lonr, of Xew Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewinghlachine Casters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompan yin g drawings, where- Figure lis a side view ot' the improvements applied to the legs ot' a sewing-machine. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is adetached view ofthe catch for holding down the operating lever. l
The invention consists` in a peculiar construction and arrangement of thel operating` parts, to wit: ln two rods at the sides and foot ot' the table-legs, each bearing a caster near each end,and attached tothet'rontlegsthrough the medium of rocking arms and clamps, and to the rear legs thronghthe medium of arms fast on a` rock-shaft, which is hung byits ends in clamps taking hold of the legs, there being an operating lever attached to this rear shaft, whereby the same is partially rotated, andthe machine-table raised upon or let oit' the casters.
The letters a b indicate the two leaves ot' a clamp, fitted to embrace the leg c and crossbrace el at their junction, the two leaves bcing held together and their hold tightened by a screw, c2. frontlegs ot' the machine. The letters d Il denote the two leaves ot the clamp embracing each of the rear lees a', and the cross-bar el, held together and tightened by a screw, d?. To each of the front clamps is pivoted an arm, f. To each ot' the rear clamps is pivoted an arm, f. The lower ends ot' the front and rear armsff are connected by the eoimecting-rods Similar clamps embrace both the' g g pivoted to both the arms. At the front and rear ends of each of these rods is hung u caster, q1 g2. The two arms j" j" instead ot' being pivoted directly to the rear clamps are rigid upon the rock-shaftl, which is square, or other than round, where it passes through the arms f j", so that these arms cannot turn upon this rod, and the ends of this rod has bearings in the rear clamps. On this bar or rock-shaft h is an operating lever, i. Yhcn this lever is down, as shown in thc drawings. all the armsffff are held nearly vertical, so that the table is supported upon the casters. It' the lever i is allowed to risc, the weight ot' the machine will cause all the arms ff to turn forward, and let the legs down upon the tloor. There is a catch, on m', pivoted to the lever y, the lower arm ot' which will catch under the rod n, when the operating lever is pressed down, and thus hold the machine ,suspended or supported upon the casters. The operator, by putting his foot on the frontend of the operating lever, can at the same time press back the arm m' ot' the catch and disengagc its hold from the rod n.
I claim as my invention- The operating lever i, the rock-shaft. l1, the connecting-rods g g, the four casters gl gl g2 y?, the arms ff, pvoted to the front table-legs through the medium of the clamps, 'and the arms j", pivoted to the. rear tabledegs through the rock-shaft, all combined, arranged, and designed for operation, and substantially as shown and described.
