KNEE REST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14.,v 1922.
Application led October 24, 1921. Serial No. 510,185.
` timore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, has invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Knee Rests, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to supports or rests and has for an object the provision of a device especially adapted for the use of persons performing labor Which Vnecessitates supporting themselves upon their knees, such as floor planing, scrubbing and the like, and has been proven advantageous in garage Work, particularly in tire changing operations.
Another object of the invention is lthe provision of a supporting device or rest, the top of which will yield to provide a comfortable supportv for the knees, means being'r provided Whereby the tension of the top may be regulated to maintain the same iuproper condition for use.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a supporting rest which is capable of being folded when not in use and which may be positively held in open position; means being further provided for protecting the surface upon which the support or rest is used.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a support or rest constructed in accordance with the invention, one of the locking sleeves being partly broken away to more clearly illustrate the frame structure.
.Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same with one of the end cover flaps folded in- Ward.
Figure 3 is a side view of the rest or support, in folded position.
Referring in detail to the dra-Wings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, theV invention is shown as including a frame which is of sectional formation and includes separate sections 10. Each of these sections comprise substantially parallel side members 11, which have connected thereto standards 12, whose free ends areconnected by end members 13. members of the frame sections are pivotally secured together as shown at 14 so as to provide a frame Which may be folded and Whose end members are spaced above the side members.
Connecting the end members 13 is a top or cover 15, which is preferably formed with a number of thicknesses of canvas or similar fabric, suitably stitched together as shown by the dotted lines so as to provide end connecting flaps 16 and cover flaps 17. These end connecting flaps 16 are secured to the end members 13 through the medium of coiled springs 18, one end of the latter being connectedA to the member 18 and the opposite ends engaging grummets 19 provided in the flaps 16. One of the flaps is provided with an additional row of grummet-s so as to permit of a properastretching of the top or cover 15 after the tension of the springs 18 have been reduced from use.
TheV construction just described, provides a top or cover which is yieldingly connected to the frame and which in addition has its connection protected by the cover flaps 17 so as to prevent accidental injury to the clothing of the user.
For the purpose of holding the frame in extended position for use, each of the side members of the frame have mounted thereon a tubular locking sleeve 20. This sleeve is capable of adjustment over the pivotal connection 14 so as to prevent the frame from folding. The springs 1S normally tend to cause a folding action of the frame, so that the extremities of the pivoted ends of the side bars 11 frictionally engage the inner surface of the sleeves 2O and prevent accin dental removal of the sleeve from the joint. This prevents accidental collapsing of the frame and possible injury to the user. It Will be thus seen that the springs perform a double function, namely, that of tensioning the top or cover and of preventing the sleeves 20 from slipping away from the pivot 14.
In order to protect the surface upon which the support or rest is used, each corner of the frame is provided with a tubular compressible cover, preferably in the form of rubber tubing 21, which extends along the standards 12 and the side bars 11, being of sufficient thickness to prevent contact of the sleeve 2O With the'floor.
The Sid@ The invention is susceptible of various Changes in its form7 proportions and minor details oi construction and the right is here- Y K Y l prlsmg a'foldingrra-me including end members and sectional side members, means pun in reserved to make such eli-anges as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is :v
l. A rest of the character described comprising a folding frame including end meml bers and sectional side members, means pivotally connecting the sections ol' each Vof the side members, s tubular sleeve positioned upon each of the side members for engagement lover the pivotal connection to prevent the iframe vfrom folding and a abrie cover Vabove the side members.
9.A A restof the character described comlotzilly eonneetingvthe sections of each of' the side members, e tubular sleeve Vpositioned upon ech of the vside members Jfoi engagement over the pivotal connection to prevent the frame from folding and a tensioned cover connecting the end members and spaced .above the side members, whereby .the ends of the sectional side members will. frie- 'tionally engage the sleeves.-
