Be it known that l, EnNns'r E. STURK, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Tuxedo Park, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented new and useful -improvements in Combination Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination furniture, and has for its primary object to provide a combined chair and couch or bed.

A further object of the invention is to Vprovide a device of this character which when in one position willV in every particular resemble a Morris chair, while when in its other position, a bed, or couch and table is provided. f n

.i further object of the invention is to provide a suitable space for stowing the bed clothing in such a manner that the same is readily and easily accessible. v

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises a chair 10, which is constructed with arms, 11. These arms are notched at their rear ends as at 12, said notch being preferably V-shaped, and provided at its extreme base with a recess 13, as shown in Fig. 1. The back 14 may be of any preferred form, and said back 14 has its side rails 15 shaped to conform to the angularities of the slots 12 in the arms 11. Projecting from the eXtreme lower ends of the side rails 15 are pins 16 of the dowel type which are adapted to be received in the re cesses 13. ing the side rails 15 near their lower ends is a transversely extending brace 19. Project ing downwardly from said transversely extending brace 19 are two members 20, the extreme lower ends of which are adapted to be received in the recesses 18.

By this arrangement of parts, it will be seen that the back rest 14 of the chair is readily removable, and at the same time, a strong and rigid structure is provided.

The chair 10 is provided with a suitable seat 11 which is hinged at one of its side edges as at 21, to a box-like structure 22. By this construction, it is apparent that after the back rest has been removed, the seat may be moved to the position shown in Fig. 2.y to provide a table 23, the bottom face of the seat 11 being employed for this purpose.

The front wall 24 of the box-like structure is removable, and has attached to its inner face, one end of a folding bed structure 25.

The folding bed structure is attached to the inner face of the removable wall by means of pins 26 which are adapted'to be received in the slots 27 of the brackets 28. The slots 27 are angular as shown in order that the pins 26 will be retained in engagement with said slot during the operation of ex tending the bed.

The two side walls 29 and 30 of the boX- like structure 22 are likewise provided with metal plates 31, each of which is provided with an angular slot 32. By this construction it is apparent that when the bed is folded up, the pins 26 will move into that portion of the slot designated by the reference character 33, thus preventing the end of the bed elevating when the same is folded.

The folding bed structure comprises a plurality of pivoted cross levers 34, said levers being pivotally secured together at their points of intersection with each other as in the well known lazy-tong type. At their central points of intersection, these levers 34 are connected together by means of a wire member 35 which extends from one pair of levers in one of the side members of the folding bed to two of the levers in the opposite side of the folding bed, and near its ends, said wire member is bent downwardly as at 36 to form a shoulder 37, the purpose of which will be hereinafter de- I scribed.

Y As shown in Fig. 4, in lieu of the mattress 39, a box springv40 with an upholstered upper face may be employed if it is desired to use the device as a couch instead of a bed, and when thus employed, the box spring is supported on the shoulders 37 of the wire members 35. The box spring is .constructed in three sections adapted-to fold upon each other in such a manner as to lie within the box-like structure 22 when the couch is folded.
