warrmc-nasx.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID M. BEAIRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing-Desks, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to writing desks and is, in nature, an attachment deslgned-to be used in connection with beds of a well known type. Myinvention is particularly desirable for use among soldiers to be attached to the beds used by them in their barracks.
The main object of my invention resides in the provision of a structure of this type which wi l mainta' degree of firmness sufiicient for the purpose, but which may be Figure 1 is a central vertical the cot portion of a bed, showing my in.-.
, parts thereof which ma be readily hung in position and such position with a removed whenever desired without the use ofjany tools whatever.
A further object of my invention resides in making this structure collapsible, so that it will require very little space when in its collapsed position, but which may be moved to an operative position and be made to kee this position as long as desired.
'Ihe preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which: 1
' section of attached and also in section,
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of one of the supporting members used in the construction of my de'vice showing the movable in two positions, one being in the other in broken lines,
structure vention full lines and Fig. 3 is an end view of the I shown in Fig. 1 on a reduced scale, and,
\ Fig.4 is a plan view of the shown in Fig. 3.
In the drawings, the foot frame of a well known tyipe of bed is shown as comprising legs 1 an superstructure being braced by a cross rod 3 and tie rods 4, each shown as extending vertically between the cross piece 5of'the U-shape member and the cross member 3.
In order th readily applied, I have provided a plurality of s aced'hanger members 6, these hanger members being formed at their upper ends Specification of Letters Patent.
' bracket arms are designed to be attached to structure a U-shaped superstructure 2, this,
at -my. attachment may be.

Application filed October 28, 1914. Serial No. 869,119.
to assume the-shape of a book 7 for embracing the portion 5 of the foot piece. Extending rearwardly from the rear side of each of these han er members, I have also provided a pluraIity of ears 8 arranged in pairs and the two ears forming each pair being spaced from each other and disposed along opposite edges of the hangers 6, thus provlding a space to receive the rods 4 as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. Theopposite face of each of the hangers 6 is also provided with two sets of pierced ears 9 and 10, the former bein provided to ivotally receive an outwar ly extending racket arm 11. These the underside of a table or desk element shown at 12 and their ivotal connection is provided so that this diask element may be swung to assume either a horizontal or a vertical osition,
In or er that thedesk element 12 may be securely locked in its horizontal position, I have provided a brace member for each hanger, these brace members being formed of levers 13 and Hand bein I respectively attached to the hanger mem ers and the bracket arms at 15 and 16. In addition, the opposite ends of each air of levers are pivotally connected toget er as is shown at 17 thus providing brace members which may be made to assume the position shown in Fig. 1, whereby the desk as held in horizontal position, or the may be broken as shown in full lines in Fig. 2 prior to the lowering of the desk to make it assume avertical position. In order to lock the levers 13 and 14 against accidental breaking, I have extended the end 18- of the lever 14 to-a considerable distance beyond pivot point and have provided this extenslon with a lip 19 designed to overlie the top edge of the lever 13 after the manner shown in Figs.
comprising spaced hanger members each provided with means at its top for attachment to the upper portion of the foot piece of a bed, a pair of rearwardly projhecting ears spaced along opposite edges of, t e upper portion of each of said hangers, a air of rearwardly projecting ears spaced a onfi opposite edges of the lower portionof eac of said hangers, the ears of each pair being spaced from each other to receive the rods forming a portion of the foot of the bed between them, an outwardly extendin br cket arm pivoted to the upper end 0 eac hanger, a table element attached to said arms, and a collapsible brace membertween t rearwardly extending earsspaced along opposite edges of the lower ortion of each of said hangers, the ears 0 each pair bein spaced from each other to receive the r s formingl a portion of the foot of the bed heem an outwardly extendin bracket arm pivoted to the upper end of eac of said hangers, a table element attached to said arms, a brace member for each arm formed of a pair of'levers, pivoted together at one of their ends and pivotally connected at their other ends to said'hanger and arm respectively, one end of one ofsaid levers being extended beyond the first named pivota connection, and a lip on the extended portion of such lever over-lyingv its compl mental lever to limit the movement of'said levers when they are pivoted together.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
