ROBERT W. HALL, OF GREELEY, COLORADO.
PORTABLE HOISTING-CBANE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bonner W. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeley, in the county of \Veld and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Hoisting- Cranes. of which the following is a specilication, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to hoisting appliances, and particularly to cranes and derricks.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a very simple crane, which is adapted to be readily attached to or detached from electric transmission poles, posts, trees and other like vertical supports, and by which the raising or lowering of objects may be conveniently accomplished.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is very simply constructed, may be cheaply made and which is portable.
A further object is to provide a device of this character with adjustable clamping means adapted to be engaged with the post,
tree or other support, whereby to hold the portable crane or derrick firmly in position upon the support.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hoisting crane in applied position upon a supporting pole; V
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the hoisting crane;
Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the hoisting crane used with a tree as a support;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clampin attachment used in Fig. 3;
ig. 5 is a sectional view through the supporting member 10, showing one of the clamping members 22 partly in section;
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of the support 10 as formed in two sections; and
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the member 17.
Referring to these figures, it will be seen that my improved device comprises a vertically extending supporting bar, designated 10, which is in the form of a channel bar and made be made either in one piece, as illustrated in Fig. 5, or in two angular sections, as illustrated in. Fig. 6. In the last named Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
Application filed June 16, 1917. Serial No. 175,137.
figure, these two angular sections are designated a and 6. These angular sections are connected to each other by means of rivets, belts or other suitable connecting devices, but it will be seen that the two angular sections when connected form together a channel iron or bar.
The upper end of the channel bar has riveted to it an angular iron designated 11, the upper end of which extends outward from the channel iron 10. Preferably the vertically disposed portion of this bar is disposed within the channel iron 10. The angular end 12 is provided with an opening 13 for the reception of the angular end 14 of a crane arm 15, the extremity of which is formed to provide an eye 16. Riveted or otherwise attached to the side flanges of the channel iron 10 is a bracket designated 17 which is formed to provide the laterally spaced portions 18, which are riveted to the side flanges of the channel iron and which are bent to engage over the edges of these flanges and to provide a relatively contracted neck and a vertically disposed eye 19. A supporting brace 20 has its lower end disposed within this eye 19 and its upper end swaged, brazed or otherwise connected to the arm '15.
. Riveted to the channel iron 10, immediately beneath the bracket or clip 17, is an angular plate 21. the upper end of which extends outward. Riveted or otherwise attached to the lower portion of the channel iron 10 are the two half pole-engaging clamping members 522 and 23. Both of these clamping members are semi-circular in form and have laterally projecting terminal ends 24, each terminal end being preferably formed with a longitudinally extending slot 25. Disposed through one slot of each clamping member is an eye-bolt 26, which passes through the slot and is engaged by a wing nut 27. Disposed between the wing nut and the terminal end 24 is a sleeve 28. It is obvious that by turning up the wing nut, the eye-bolt may be drawn through the terminal end of each clamping member to any extent desired. Attached to each eyebolt is a chain 29, so formed that the links are adapted to be disposed within the other slot 25 of the clamping member so that a certain portion of the chain will lie transversely to the slot to thus hold the chain engaged with the walls of the slot and prevent the chains from slipping therethrough.
In the practical use of this device, as for instance, in applying it to an electric transmission pole, the clamping members are disposed to partially embrace the pole with the bracket 21 resting on top of the pole and when the crane or derrick .has been put in position thereon, the chains are passed around the pole and drawn as tightly as possible and engaged with the slots 24 and. then the eye-bolts are tightened up so as to tighten the chains around the pole or other support. It will thus be apparent that the attachment is very firmly secured to the pole or other support in such a way that the strain caused by lifting objects will not cause the detachment of the crane or derrick. It will likewise be seen from Fig.
3 that it is not necessary "to supply this that this crane or derrick support with the U-shaped-clamping members disposed partly around the support but that the device may be reversed and clamped upon atree so that the bracket 21 will project outward away from the tree, as will the clamping members.
This hanger, derrick or crane is particularly useful for the purpose of hoisting transformers and placing transformers in position on the cross arms of telegraph poles, in that this attachment does away with the necessity of having a lineman on the pole and permits the hoisting and placing of the transformer plished from the ground, thereby protecting the linemanfrom a possible shock or' injury from a slip or from son of the pole breaking off. use of this portable crane, it requires one or two men, according to the size of the transformer, to place the transformer in position on the cross arm, especially when disposed on top cross arms. It will be obvious may be used either or a double cross in ury by rea Without the on poles having a single arm.
Where the hanger or crane is to be used on trees, posts, the bracket '21 would interfere with the proper positioning of the crane or derrick, I preferably provide a clamping attach- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner 01. Iate'nts,
being accomor in other situations, where r ment, such as illustrated in Fig. 4E and designated 30.. There are two of these clamping members, each of them formed to provide a middle portion 31, adapted to fit around the channel iron 10 and having laterally projecting arms which are longitudi nally slotted as at 32. WVith this means, the ends of the chains 29 may be disposed in the slots 32, the chains tightened up as much as possible, and then the weight on the crane will draw the chains taut, as illustrated in Fig. 3. It will be, of course, understood that apulley 33 is to be connected to the eye 16 and that suitable tackle will extend through this pulley.
It will be understood that this device is particularly adapted for use on poles for supporting power transmission conductors and the bracket 21 engaging as it does over the top of the pole, is of particular value in supporting the weight of the transformer when it is being hoisted, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A portable crane comprising a supporting member, an arm swingingly mounted upon the supporting member, a bracket attached to the supporting member and extending therefrom, and a pair of clamps attached to the supporting member below said arm and having laterally bent slotted ends, and chains for each of said clamps, each chain having attached to one end thereof a shank adapted to be inserted through a slot of the corresponding clamp, the shank being screw-threaded, a sleeve surrounding the shank, anda nut engaging the screw-threads thereof whereby to tighten the chain, the
opposite end of the chain having detachable engagement with the opposite end of the clamp in the slot thereof. V
In testimony whereof I hereunto my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT W. HALL.
