To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MILS M. DAWSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montgomery, in thecounty of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cane or Grutch Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends the provision of a cane or crutch attachment, which in addition to affording a maximum bearing surface for articles of the character mentioned, prevents slipping of the same as they are brought in contact with the ground or surface. 7

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following description is takenv in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the attachment applied to a cane.

Fig. 2 is a similar view partly in section.

The use of the invention in connection with a cane is sufficiently characteristic of its utility and admirably illustrates the invention, and will constitute one of its most useful applications. While the description is addressed to the cooperation of the invention with a cane, it is understood that the device is applicable to crutches and all forms of walking sticks, and that such general application is contemplated by the claims.

The device forming the subject matter of my invention embodies a surface engaging member 10, which can be constructed from any suitable material to prevent slipping of thecane A or other article with which it is associated, as the latter is brought in contact with the ground or surface. The member 10 however is preferably constructed from rubber and of spherical contour, and is adapted to be offset relatively to the lower end of the cane A.

As shown in this particular instance a substantially V-shaped rod has its terminals secured to the cane A in any suitable manner, with one limb 11 projecting at right angles from a point adjacent the lower extremity of the cane. The surface engaging member 10 as above stated is preferably of spherical contour, and is provided with a central bore or opening for the reception of the limb 11, whereby the latter serves as a support to space the member 10 an appropriate distance from the cane A. The V- shaped rod is arranged to project rearwardly from the cane A so that the rod and ground engaging member as a unit form a heel for the cane, and obviously provides a maximum bearing surface for the latter. In use the member 10 is brought in contact with the ground or surface immediately before the lower end of the cane, and'by reason of the quality of the material from which the member 10 is constructed obviously prevents slipping of the cane or other article. While the member 10 will remain fixed relatively to the limb 11 of the V-shaped rod while in use, the said member can be slightly rotated about the rod from time to time to present a new wearing surface as the member 10 becomes worn at points about its circumference.

While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be apparent, I desire to have it understood that what is herein shown is merely illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention to which I do not limit myself and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.

What is claimed is p 1. A cane or crutch attachment comprising a non-slipping surface engaging member, and means for supporting the member spaced laterally from the lower end of the article.

2. A cane or crutch attachment comprising a non-skidding surface engaging member of spherical contour offset relatively to the lower end of the article, and means for rotatably supporting the member.

3. A cane or crutch attachment comprising a substantially V-shaped rod projecting from the article adjacent its lower end, and a non-slipping surface engaging member supported upon one limb of the rod and spaced laterally from the" adjacent end of the article.
