A. SILBERT.
REST.
APPLICATION man Nov; 29. 1915.
attoznel @vita/tung UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE@ AUGUST SILBERT, OF FORT STANTON, NEW MEXICO.
REST.
Application filed November 29, 1915.
To all whom t may concern: i
Be it known that I, AUGUST SILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Stanton, in the county of Lincoln and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a rest for a chair back and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character readily ad j ustable and so shaped as to conform to the curvature of the back of the user.
An object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the rest so that the out` line of the rest may readily conform to the curvature of the back of the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rest the main element of which is so shaped as to conform accurately to the outline of the back of a person.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a rear elevation oit a chair showing my rest applied thereto. F ig.2 is a vertical section through a chair showing the rest also in section. The remaining figures are detail views.
The numeral l'designates the back of a chair 2 tol which my invention is attached. A plate 3 the main element of the invention is slidably mounted in two of the cross bars 4t of the back l and is so shaped as to conform to the outline of the back of a person, that is to say, the plate is shaped to have a lower bulged portion 5 adapted to engage the small of the back and an upper bulged portion 6 adapted to engage the head of a person, while to the opposite sides of a vertical line through the plate are arranged recesses T adapted to receive the shoulder blades. For adjusting the plate vertically for insuring the proper registration between the shoulder blades and the recesses, I provide the adjusting mechanism 8. This adjusting mechanism comprises a rack bar 9 secured to the rear surface of the plate 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

serial No. 64,122.
with which coperates a gear 10 secured to one end of the shaft 11 that has a detachable connection at one end with the bracket 12 secured to one of the cross bars 4 and has its remaining end portion passing through the vertical bar 13 of the back so as to have connected thereto a knob 14 and a ratchet 15, the latter coperating with a dog 16 adapted to be manually operated. For preventing disengagement between the upper cross bar I and the plate I pass through the uppercross bar 4. a bolt 17, the head of which engages the slotted plate 18 secured to the rear surface of the plate 3,
From the 'foregoing description it will be seen that a person when using the chair can readily adjust the plate vertically for insuring the proper position of the plate with relation to the back of the user, and lock such adjustment by means of a dog 16 being brought into engagement with the ratchet 15.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing the advantages of the construction and the method oi' operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the' invention relates, and while I have described the principle of the operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the cevice shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims.
`What I claim is 1. In combina-tion with a chair back, including a pair of horizontally arranged vertically spaced bars, a plate slidably mounted on said bars, a rack bar secured to said plate, a gear meshing with said rack bar, a shaft mounted for rotation and mounted upon one of said bars, a bolt mounted on the other bar and connected with said plate for holding the latter' associated with both bars.
2. In Lcombination with a chair back, inoluding a pair of horizontally arranged vertically spaced bars, a plate slidably mounted on said bars, a vertically arranged rack bar embedded in said plate, a gear meshing with said rack bar, a bearing carried by one oit Said bars for holding said gear associated In testimony whereof I afIX my signature with the rack bar, said plate being bulged n presence of two Witnesses. at an upper and lower point and formed AUGUST SILBERT. with a. pair of recesses in the upper bulged Witnesses:
5 portion disposed on opposite sides on a Ver- F. H. MCKEON, tical line through said plate. JOHN J. BROWN.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner ofk Patents, Washington, D. C.
