FLOATING-JACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1'7, 191d.
Application'flled January 11,1913. Serial No. 741,454.
To all whom it mayconcern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. BRYE-Rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helmer, in the county of Luce and State of Michigan, have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements in Floating-Jackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to floating jackets adapted to be used by persons for the purpose of keeping them afloat, so that the device can be used as a part of a bathing suit, as well as a life-preserver, and it has for one of its objects the provision of an article of this character which comprises a jacket having a buoyant air member secured thereto in such a manner that the freedom of movement of the arms will not be interfered with.
The invention has furthermore for its object the particular organization of the buoyant member on the jacket, so that the front and rear portions are substantially balanced in their efficiency to produce the best results.
Further obj ects of the invention will hereinafter appear and beparticularly defined in the claim.
The invention has been clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of the device as worn by a person. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, Fig. 3 is a rear view, and Fig. 4; is a cross section of the inflated buoyant member and illustrates the method of attaching the same to the jacket.
Referring to the drawings, 10 denotes a jacket or blouse made from any suitable flexible material and shown herein as a part of a bathing suit. Disposed around the body portion of the jacket is the buoyant member above referred to, comprising a tube 11 made of thin flexible rubber and having at the front thereof an extension 11 provided with an inflating nipple 12 which may be of any desired or well known construction. The tube 11 is laid on the jacket in zig zag form having its upper and lower bends 11" well rounded as shown so as to prevent creases or kinks in the same, so that the buoyant member may be inflated from the extension 11 above referred to,
throughout its entire length. The buoyant the way, when not in use. Both the front and rear portions of the jacket are thus provided with the zig zag layers of the tube, and they are in communication through side lengths 15 which may be made separate from, or unitary with, the front and rear tube portions, and these side tubes are placed preferably at the waist-line so as to avoid their being damaged, as far as possible.
It should be understood that the casing or envelop issufficiently roomy that the tube may be inflated as far as desired, and for that reason I do not confine myself to any particular shape or form herein shown. Other changes may be made in the organization or combination of the buoyant member with the jacketwithout departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim The combination with a garment, of an inflatable air tube laid zig-zag on both the front and back portions of said garment and having both of its ends closely adjacent each other at the front portion of said gar-' the garment.
In testimony whereof I aflix my' signaturein presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM N. BRYERS.
