specifications Letters Patent.
To all 'whom t may concern.' l
resident of Chicago, in the county of,Cook
and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bust- Forms, of which the following is a `full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to bust forms and designs to provide an improved device, designed to supply any natural deficiency of form and to support the breasts, which will efectively give the appearance of'the natural bust, and which may be readily fitted to different breasts and worn with comfort.
It is now common practice to make breastforms or pads of an elastic oreXible casing to hold air under pressure and to form thfe back of the form, of flexible or resilient material, such as rubber, and lresultantly the back of the pneumatic form would, 1n use, exert pressure on the glandular structure of the breast and nipple and render the wearer uncomfortable; particularly if the breasts were somewhat developed so that they would be compressed between the ribs of the wearer and the back of the bust-form; rIhe invention designs to lovercome this. objection by providing a comparatively stlf back for the pad, this back being suiciently stiff to remainunafected by air-pressure 1n the fortably around ythe breast, the pressure of back of the pad being evenly distributed throughout the entire area of the breast. Or, if desired to avoid pressure against the glandularstructure of the breast, the back of the pad may be fitted so its outer edge portion will rest against the body of. the wearer, a pocket being formed in the back of the pad to receive andl comfortably support the breast. Further this back is formedof pliable material so that it may be bent into different shapes and nicely tted to the wearer, to` avoid discomfort in use.
TheV invention further designs to construct Ithebust-forms so that when worn, they will not have the appearance of lifeless members, but will vibrate responsively to movements of the wearer. y.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction hereinafter set forth and more particularly deinedby claim at the conclusion hereof. p p
In the drawings; Figure 1.*is a perspective of a bust-form embodying the invention, Fig.
2 is a section through one of 'the pneumatic so that the pad will lit nicely and comy pads. Fig. 3 is a similar 'view showing the' back of thepad adjusted to form a cavity or pocket to receive and support a breast.
1 The improved formcomprises a pair of 'pneumatic orinflatable pads, one for each breast, these being usually connected by an adjustable band A adapted to pass around the back of the person to hold the pads laterally. A buckle A1 is provided so that the relative position of the pads may be adjusted to fit. differentbosoms. VThe pads are sustained vertically by adjustable shoulder straps B. The bands and shoulder straps are secured to the backs of thepads. Each pad consists of a casing C adapted to contain air under pressure and its front, C1 is Patented July 30, 1912.
convex to fill out the bosom over which it is worn. The casing is formed of suitable flexible or elastic material/such as rubber. The back D of each pad consists of a thin plate of pliable material, such as aluminum, which may be normally fiat as shown in Fig. 2 and is suitably covered with rubber or other suitable lining material at both faces as at D1.
If desired the plate may be secured to the casing by molding it in or cementing it to the rubber lining I)1 formed integral with the casing, so that the chamber in the casing will be air-tight. This pliable and comparatively stif back-plate permits the back of` the pads to bev bent into more or less concave form, as shown in Fig. 3, to form a pocket for and support the breast, and when thus bent to inherently retain its concave shape so that it will fit around the breast and, remain unaffected by air-pressure in the casing, thus avoiding uncomfortable pressure against the glandular portion of the breastand nipple. Furthermore, the back, thus constituted may be bent into varying degrees of concav'ity so the pad may be snugly fitted to the wearer and worn without discomfort. Furthermore the concave back of the pad fserves to support the breast. Each pad is provided with a suitable valve e or means by whichthe casing may be inflated.
In use, when pneumatic pads are inated and coveredv by garments, the bosom is sometimes rather lifeless in appearance, due to 7 ance, a weight f is molded into the front of the casing C, and under the influence of the body 'is suspended at the front of the pad and sets the front in motion so that it will vibrate freely in response to any movement since these may be modied within the scope' of the appended claim without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A pneumatic bust-pad, the combination lof aninatable casing forming the front of the pad, a pliable comparatively sti' backplate, saldcasing being held by said pressure only, and a weight securedwholly within the casing and to the front-thereof, so that it will cause vibration of thefront.
