Abstract

A bassinet system including a bassinet and mount that provides a primary use mode when used in a conventional/proper manner (e.g., bassinet attached to the mount) and one or more secondary modes when the bassinet is not attached to the mount and otherwise not properly supported (e.g., when off the mounting structure and resting on a surface). In another aspect, a bassinet assembly includes a sleep surface, and the assembly is configured such that the sleep surface is only usable for supporting an infant when the assembly is mounted to a proper support structure.

A cradle system as described in configuration 3, wherein the hub includes a channel for accommodating a top guide rail of a playpen. 5. A cradle system as described in configuration 1, wherein the sleeping surface is supported by a foldable sidewall when the upper guide rail is attached to the at least one mounting post. 6. A cradle system as described in configuration 1, wherein the sidewall is foldable and formed of fabric. 7. A cradle system as described in configuration 6, wherein the height of the foldable sidewall is less than the height of the at least one mounting post. 8. A cradle system as described in configuration 1, wherein the mounting bracket is configured to extend under a mattress. 9. The cradle system of configuration 1, wherein the at least one mounting post comprises two spaced-apart support posts. 10. The cradle system of configuration 1, wherein the at least one mounting post has a height extending approximately 12 inches above the mounting bracket. 11. The cradle system of configuration 1, wherein the at least one mounting post has a height extending approximately 10 to 24 inches above the mounting bracket. 12. The cradle system of configuration 1, wherein the mounting bracket and the at least one mounting post are integrally formed. 13. The cradle system of configuration 1, wherein the mounting bracket is U-shaped, and the at least one mounting bracket extends vertically from the mounting bracket. 14. The cradle system of configuration 1, wherein at least one of the cradle or the at least one mounting post includes a height adjustment mechanism to change the height of the upper guide rail above the mounting bracket. 15. The cradle system of configuration 1, further including a wall bracket for supporting the upper guide rail of the cradle. 16. A cradle for attachment to an associated mounting structure, the cradle comprising: an upper guide rail; a sleeping plane; and a foldable sidewall extending from the upper guide rail to the sleeping plane; wherein the foldable sidewall is configured to fold under the weight of the upper guide rail when the upper guide rail is not supported by the associated mounting structure. 17. A cradle, as in configuration 16, wherein the sleeping surface has a length of less than 36 inches and a width of less than 20 inches. 18. A cradle, as in configuration 16, further includes a hub connected to the upper guide rail, configured to releasably engage the associated mounting structure. 19. A cradle, as in configuration 18, wherein the hub includes a channel for accommodating a top guide rail of an associated playpen. 20. A cradle, as in configuration 16, wherein the foldable sidewall is formed of fabric. 21. A cradle, as in configuration 16, wherein the sleeping surface is movable in a direction toward the upper guide rail. 22. A cradle for attachment to a mounting structure, the cradle comprising: an upper guide rail having a mounting hub; a sleeping surface; and a foldable sidewall extending from the upper guide rail to the sleeping surface; wherein the cradle does not have any rigid member extending between the upper guide rail and the sleeping surface. 23. The cradle of configuration 22, wherein the sleeping surface has a length of less than 36 inches and a width of less than 20 inches. 24. The cradle of configuration 22, further comprising a hub connected to the upper guide rail, configured to releasably engage the associated mounting structure. 25. The cradle of configuration 22, wherein the foldable sidewall is formed of fabric. 26. The cradle of configuration 22, wherein the sleeping plane is movable toward the upper guide rail. 27. A cradle comprising: an upper guide rail; a base supporting a sleeping plane; and a sidewall extending from the upper guide rail to the base; wherein the base includes a protruding member that prevents the cradle from remaining upright when the base is placed on a supporting surface. 28. The cradle of configuration 27, further comprising a support adapted to engage with the protruding member to support the cradle in an upright primary/usage mode. 29. A cradle as configured 28, wherein the protruding member includes a single leg adapted to be received in a socket of the support. 30. A cradle as configured 27, wherein the protruding member includes at least two asymmetrical legs. 31. A cradle as configured 27, further including at least one hub connected to the upper guide rail, the at least one hub being adapted to mate with a mounting structure to support the cradle in an upright primary use/mode. 32. A cradle as configured 27, further including at least one playpen support, wherein the protruding member includes a lower portion of the playpen support extending below a sleeping plane of the cradle. 33. A rocking crib, as in configuration 32, wherein the at least one playbed support includes a guide rail latch for securing the rocking crib to a guide rail of a playbed. 34. A rocking crib, as in configuration 33, wherein the at least one playbed support includes a release actuator for selectively releasing the guide rail latch. 35. A rocking crib, as in configuration 33, wherein the at least one playbed support includes a bottom plate latch. 36. A rocking crib, as in configuration 34, wherein the release actuator is configured to selectively release both the guide rail latch and the bottom plate latch upon actuation. 37. A 32-inch cradle, wherein the lower edge of the playbed frame is non-planar.
