Abstract
743,111. Gun barrels. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. Oct. 6, 1950 [Oct. 6, 1949], No. 25666/49. Class 92 A barrel or barrel liner is made from interconnected sections at least one of which is manufactured from molybdenum or tungsten, or from an alloy rich in either or both these metals, which metals have been subjected to a vacuum arc melting process. The sections may be forgings or castings and are either in the form of complete rings, or, in the case of large barrels, in the form of parts of a ring. The sections may be united by welding alone, or by welding in combination with mechanical joints. In one construction, the breech and muzzle ends of a barrel or its liner are made from normal gun steel, and the intermediate part from the metals above referred to. It is stated that these metals are better suited to resist heat and corrosion.
