573,429. Automatic smallarms. VESELY, J. Dec. 31, 1940, Nos. 18259/40 and 7628/41. [Class 119] A magazine particularly for automatic guns has two or more cartridge compartments of box or drum form arranged one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the cartridges, and retaining means to prevent cartridges emerging from a rear compartment until all the cartridges have been removed from the preceding compartment. The feed from a rear compartment is effected without displacing the compartment. In the form shown as applied to a magazine of the depending-box type, the cartridges are arranged in double rows in two compartments 5, 6, one behind the other, and a detent 16 pivoted to the gun casing holds the uppermost cartridge in the rear compartment 6 out of the path of the breech-block until all the cartridges in the compartment 5 have been inserted in the gun chamber by the breech-block. The platform 7 of the compartment 5 carries a spring plunger 9 which is projected into engagement with the arm 17 of the detent 16 to release the cartridges in the compartment 6 only when the platform 7 occupies its fully-raised position under the action of its spring 8. The breech-block then removes the cartridges one by one from the compartment 6. The wall 11 of the compartment 6 is inclined as shown to guide the cartridges upwards in a single row to the outlet, which registers for guiding purposes with the upper part of the platform 7.
