Abstract

4486. Fyfe, J. S. Feb. 20. Dividers.-A pair of callipers, dividers, or the like comprises two pivoted legs 1 mounted on a bifurcated member 3 and provided at their upper ends with outwardly-extending arms 5 attached to links 6 which are pivoted to a crosspiece 8 sliding on a pin 4 carried by the member 3 and acted upon by an adjustable spring 9 in order to force the arms apart to close the calliper legs. To one of the pivot pins 17 of the arms and links is secured a screwed rod 19 which passes through a hole formed in the other pin 18, and a nut 21 on the rod is adapted to force the arms towards each other to adjust the position of the legs. The legs may be retained in their set position by means of a slotted link 15 pivoted to one leg and a thumb nut 16 mounted on the other leg. In a modification, the links 6 lie between forked extensions on the cross-head 8 while the lower ends of the links are forked to embrace the arms 5. In a construction adapted for outside measurements, the member 3 is formed with segmental extensions provided with curved slots in which engage pins secured to the legs, either of which may be provided with a clamping-nut.
