Abstract

1517311 Wheelchairs E W SHUTTLEWORTH 17 March 1976 [17 March 1975] 11018/75 Heading B7H Electric drive means for a wheelchair comprises a battery support platform 4 attachable to the chair and pivotally supporting a frame member 19 carrying an electric motor 3, drive transmission 22 and a driven ground wheel 1. Batteries 8 carried by the platform 4 are connected to the motor 3 via a main on/off switch box 26 and a switch 9 located on the handle (10) Fig. 1 (not shown). The platform 4 is connected to the chair frame by means of lugs 14 as shown. A manual lever 24 welded to frame 19 incorporates a spring catch (not shown) operable to lift the wheel 1 clear of the ground. A battery charging element may be incorporated in box 26. In a modification (not shown) the support platform comprises a plastics moulding, similar to platform 4, supported in a metal tube cradle attached to the wheel chair.
