Abstract

A shoulder supported infant carrier 10 suitable for infants of various sizes comprises a first large open-topped pouch 12, Fig. 5, with leg and arm openings 40, 42 adapted to be supported on the shoulders of a wearer by shoulder straps 16, Fig. 6, and a second smaller open-topped pouch 14 supported inside the first pouch, with leg openings 62, each pouch having releasable fastenings such as sliding clasp fasteners 66, 68 to facilitate the insertion or removal of the infant. The outer pouch which can take an infant of toddler size is composed of a front 22 and rear 34 panel each sev/n to a belt 18 and sewn together at the side margins, the upper margin of the back panel being narrowed by a series of tucks. The shoulder straps 16 are reinforced in their upper parts by crossed straps (28), Fig. 2 (not shown), each having a buckle 30, 48 which has a pad 32 beneath it. The lower part of the strap, which is adjustable, is attached to the pouch at the point 40. The belt 18 has a row of mating snap fastener elements 50 which allow for different waist measurements. On the back of front panel 22 is attached the inner pouch 14 to carry smaller children, the size of which is adjustable by two or more horizontal rows of press studs 52 on the front panel engageable with a mating row of studs on the inner panel and by releasable tucks 60 in the upper margin 58. A detachable bib 20 made of soft absorbent fabric is also attached by snap fasteners 70 to the front panel. The carrier may alternatively be worn on the chest in a car.
