Abstract

115,493. Falconer, W. W. P., and Deans, J. May 10, 1917. Exercising-apparatus.-Relates to apparatus for exercising and loosening shoulder joints, and of the type in which an oscillatory adjustably weighted pendulum is used. The forearm and elbow are held in a fixed position with the elbow flexed and the shoulder joint is subjected to movements of rotation by a swinging load which is passive, positive, or resistive in its action. The forearm or elbow supporting-member f, provided with an angle-piece or socket g to receive the elbow of the patient and an adjustable projecting handle h arranged obliquely to form a grip, is carried at the upper end of a short vertical spindle e, which is mounted on the cross-bar c of a wooden or other frame and connected by bevel or other gearing at its lower end to an horizontal shaft o carrying at its rear end a disk r to which a pendulum s is adjustably attached. The bar s carries an adjustable weight u and a fixed counterpoise t, and is clamped to the graduated disk r by means of clamps v and nuts w. The horizontal member f is longitudinally grooved, and the forearm is secured in position by a strap x &c. The other arm of the patient is secured by a strap to one nf the uprights a, b.
