Abstract

The invention relates to walking sticks with off-centred supports which can be converted into orthopaedic crutches. Figure 1 represents this walking stick from the front, the axis (3) of the forearm support (1) of which forms an angle (4) lying outwards with respect to the axis (2) of the walking stick and the axis (5) of the handle (6). In Figure 2 this walking stick is converted into a crutch by adding a tube (9) which can be adjusted (10), which enters the body of the walking stick (11) and which supports the shoulder (armpit) piece (1) with a recess (8).

Description

The present invention relates to walking sticks of the English stick type which can be transformed into orthopedic crutches.

The classic English canes force the forearm to be maintained in the extension of the handle, which is not the normal anatomical position for walking using 2 support points, and has the effect of causing additional fatigue.

Traditional crutches have only two supports and largely support the weight of the body by pressing under the armpit, which is annoying because it compresses the nerves and the axillary artery passing through the hollow of the armpit.

The devices according to the invention make it possible to remedy these drawbacks.

The new English rod does not force the arm to be kept stiff in the extension of the handle; it is slightly bent outwards which allows the forearm to exert greater pressure on its support point, this relieving the hand support point, resulting in less fatigue.

Due to the decentering towards the outside of this forearm support point relative to the axis of the handle, the latter is thus closer to the body, which provides greater stability.

These English rods are quickly convertible into crutches with three support points that distribute the body weight well and give them a comfort that traditional crutches do not have.

The anatomical support under the armpit consisting of two flexible foam tubes supports the front on the pectoralis major muscle and the back on the scapular to leave the axillary hollow released.

This support can be mounted on a spring or flexible block.

In a more simplified variant the body of the cane is straight, and is an extension of the bottom tube which is adjusted in length by entering the top of the cane; this is the case for the tube supporting the support under the armpit which itself enters the bottom tube of the cane.

These two tubes having the same perforations, a single fixing suffices to effect their adjustment.

- Figure 1 shows a front view of an English cane.

- Figure 2 shows the same cane transformed into a crutch in left view.

- Figure 3 shows a front view of a straight English rod.

Figure 4 shows the same cane turned into a crutch when viewed from the left.

English cane fig. 1 shows an embodiment of the invention. This front view shows the angle (4) offset towards the outside of the axis (3) of the forearm (1) relative to the axis (2) of the rod or to the vertical extension of the axis (5) of the handle (6).

In Figure 2 we see this cane transformed into an orthopedic crutch by the addition of the support under the armpit (7) consisting of a V with foam ends at each end which leave a recess (8) opposite the axillary hollow of the armpit.

FIG. 3 represents a simplified variant of this English rod, the body (ll) of which is aligned with the bottom tube (14). It therefore has only one straight axis (13).

In Figure 4 is shown this straight rod transformed into a stand whose support under the armpit (7) is mounted on a spring (12).

The low tube (14) which enters the body of the rod (ll) is adjusted with the same clip (10) as the tube (9) of the stand. These tubes fit into each other with the same perforations.
