Abstract

A tubular element (4) with serrated teeth is used. It surrounds the tube (5) and has an inclined outer surface by which it is squeezed into frictional contact with tube (5). Force is applied by a member (1), constrained to move linearly with respect to body (7), via a force transmitting member (1) and an elastic sleeve (3). A member (1) has an inclined face which comes into contact with sleeve (3) when it twists during application of force. Element (4) has a longitudinal cross section of a beam arranged to accept point loading and apply uniform loading to tube.
