Abstract

The lid (10) has a rim (14) which is folded over with the side of the container to form a seal. The lid has two parallel weakened lines (26, 30) running round the lid, defining a central removable part (12). A tear-off piece (32) is attached to the lid by a rivet (40) and has a ring (34) for it to be gripped. The central part has transverse stiffening ribs or grooves (22). An inner line of weakness (48, 52, 54) assists movement of the piece (32). The tear off piece is shaped with a cambered cross-section so as to have limited point contact with the lid, so that deformation of the lid due to internal pressure does not lift the end of the ring above the level of the container rim.
