Abstract

The material to be expanded, contg. a blowing agent, is heated and expanded before being injected into the mould while it is still plastic, but is not subjected to further expansion. The process is esp. applicable to polystyrene or polyethylene granules contg. an expanding agent, pref. a liquid. The density of the moulded article is controlled by the amount of expanding agent and the pressure in the mould. The appts. for the process has a plasticising chamber for softening the material, a heated expansion chamber and an injection mould.
