Abstract

An artificial limb comprises an articulated supporting structure enclosed in an elastic cover having an outer contour resembling that of a natural limb, the cover urging the supporting structure into extended position and resisting its collapse. An artificial leg comprises a thigh portion 64, 89, 90 which is adjustable in length, connected by a knee joint 60 to a shin portion 40 which is also adjustable in length and is connected by an ankle joint to a foot plate 5. A stump socket 92 is provided. The elastic cover is made of rubber or polyurethane foam having a surface resilience substantially equal to that of natural muscle and is covered in skincoloured latex. The cover is applied around the supporting structure in a two-part mould 100. The knee joint (Figs. 6 to 8, not shown), comprises spaced lugs 68, 69 on the skin portion and a cylindrical member 65 on the thigh portion which is pivotal in aligned holes 70, 71 in the lugs. A pin 81 in the cylindrical member is retractable against a spring 84 (Fig. 9, not shown) by a pull cord 85, which extends through the thigh portion and stump socket to the exterior of the limb, to permit free movement of the knee joint. In projected position, the pin 81 engages one of a series of holes 77 in a sector member 76 located between the lugs to lock the knee joint in an extended or desired angular position. The ankle joint (Fig. 4, not shown) comprises a sphere 42 on the skin portion which engages a hemispherical cup 21 attached to the foot plate, universal movement of the sphere in the cup being limited by the edges of an oval aperture in a cap 30 which retains the sphere in the cup.
