Abstract

A bottle &c. cap of plastics material has its skirt composed of a number of spaced sectors 3 closable in end-to-end relationship around the cup holding shoulder of the bottle, and which have circumferentially engageable interlocking means 5, 6. When the cap is applied, projections 5 enter recesses 6 of adjacent sectors to retain them in position. The cap has annular grooves 11 and 12 and an integral sleeve 8 with inclined, flexible, annular ribs 10. A tool for applying the caps includes a piston 13 and a centring ring 14 with a shoulder 15 on which rests a cap to be applied. The piston moves down to force the sleeve into the bottle mouth and then the ring is lowered to urge the sectors inwards against the bottle shoulder. The cap may be removed by an ordinary opener, or it may have one or more weakened zones which will tear it may have a tear-off strip.
