Abstract
The present invention relates to a universal bi-directionally displaceable wheelchair seat assembly utilizing a battery powered control unit assembly including an electric motor to bi-directionally displace the wheelchair seat a predetermined distance to help prevent bed sores. The control unit assembly is connected to an actuation plate with a shaft that travels through a passage in the wheelchair seat. The actuation plate includes an actuation rod mounted to a bottom of the seat, the actuation rod moving the seat bi-directionally upon rotational movement of the actuation plate. The wheelchair seat may include a motorized adjuster that a user can adjust to regulate the frequency and speed of displacement of the seat.
Description
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a wheelchair seat and, more particularly, to a wheelchair seat that is sufficiently displaced from its initial position to help prevent complications associated with bed sores of a wheelchair bound patient.
Background
In the past, some designs for adjustable wheelchair seats have been designed. However, none of these designs include an actuation assembly that can laterally displace the seat so that the user does not spend a significant amount of time in succession at a single fixed location.
Applicants believe that the relevant reference corresponds to U.S. patent application No. us20050279540 to Donald Wisner. However, it differs from the present invention in that the Wisner reference moves the seat forward and backward and tilts the seat. The present invention utilizes significantly fewer components and focuses on moving the seat in a bi-directional motion a predetermined distance sufficient to prevent bed sores.
Other documents describing the closest subject provide more or less complex features, none of which address the problem in an efficient and economical manner. None of these patents address the novel features of the present invention.
Disclosure of Invention
It is one of the primary objects of the present invention to provide a mobile seat assembly that is laterally displaced in a bi-directional motion a sufficient distance to displace the weight of a user on the seat to help prevent bed sores.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a mobile seat assembly that cooperates with a control unit to bi-directionally displace the seat at a preselected frequency that is controllable by a user.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a mobile seat assembly that is actuated by a motor that can be powered by a battery to ensure independent wheelchair mobility.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide such a device which is inexpensive to implement and maintain while maintaining the effectiveness of the device.
Other objects of the invention will be set forth in the following part of the specification, wherein the detailed description is given for the purpose of fully disclosing the invention without placing limitations thereon.
Drawings
In view of the above and other related objects, the present invention comprises the details of construction and the combination of parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
fig. 1 shows a front elevational view of the present invention having a seat assembly 20, the seat assembly 20 being mounted to a wheelchair with an actuating assembly 40.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of seat assembly 20 to show actuating member 40 in its starting position.
Fig. 2A is a perspective view of the seat assembly 20 to show the actuating member 40 in its displaced position, thereby displacing the seat assembly 20 a predetermined distance to the left.
Fig. 2B is a perspective view of seat assembly 20 to show actuating member 40 in its displaced position as linking member 42 rotates about actuating disk 44.
Fig. 2C is a perspective view of the seat assembly 20 to show the actuating member 40 in its retracted or home position, and the seat assembly 20 has been laterally displaced again to its starting point.
Fig. 3 is an illustration of an operational diagram of the seat assembly 20 showing how it is displaced when mounted to a wheelchair.
Figure 4 is a partial side view of a wheelchair with all components mounted thereon according to the present invention.
Detailed Description
Referring now to the drawings, wherein the invention is generally referred to by the reference numeral 10, it can be seen that it basically comprises a seat assembly 20, an actuating assembly 40 and a control unit assembly 60.
As shown in fig. 1, the seat assembly 20 includes a seat member 22, the seat member 22 being positioned on the seat 12 of the wheelchair 14. As shown in fig. 2-2C, seat member 22 is mounted with its bottom surface to a first distal end 41 of an actuating rod 42 at a predetermined location on the bottom surface to cooperate for effective bi-directional movement.
A second distal end 43 of actuation lever 42 is mounted to an actuation plate 44, which actuation plate 44 rotates in a clockwise or counterclockwise manner to push actuation lever 42 to move seat member 22 laterally to the right or left, as viewed in fig. 2-3. This movement laterally displaces seat member 22 in a given direction by the user to prevent the formation of pressure sores on the user's body.
As can be seen in fig. 1 and 4, the actuator disk 44 is perpendicularly mounted to a first axial end 46a of the longitudinal rotational shaft 46, the longitudinal rotational shaft 46 being mounted at its second, opposite axial end 46b to the control unit assembly 60. With the longitudinal axis of rotation 46 connecting the actuator disk 44 to the control unit assembly 60, the longitudinal axis of rotation 46 passes through the seat opening 12 a.
The control unit assembly 60 includes a housing 62, the housing 62 housing an electric motor 63, a motor reducer 64, a rechargeable battery 66 and a motor regulator 68. The motor 63 causes the shaft 46 to rotate, thereby rotating the actuation plate 44 and moving the actuation rod 42 to shift the position of the seat 22. The reducer 64 reduces the speed at which the actuation disc 44 rotates to provide a slower lateral movement to the seat member 22. The motor speed regulator 68 allows the user to control the frequency and speed of the rotational movement of the actuation disc 44. In addition, motor speed adjuster 68 controls the amount of clockwise or counterclockwise movement of actuator disk 44, thereby controlling the displacement distance of the bi-directional displacement of seat member 22.
In an alternative embodiment, actuation plate 44 and/or actuation rod 42 may have various dimensions depending on the desired displacement of seat member 22. The foregoing description represents the best understanding of the objects and advantages of the invention. Different embodiments can be made by the inventive concept of the present invention. It is to be understood that all matter disclosed herein is to be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
