Cartwright Eustis IV ("Carty") Obituary

New Orleans, Louisiana - Cartwright Eustis IV, 84, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025. "Carty," as he was affectionately known, was born to Cartwright Eustis III and Elizabeth Nourse Eustis on Groundhog Day, February 2, 1941. He was a lifelong New Orleanian. He graduated from Alcee Fortier High School in 1959 and subsequently worked as a bookkeeper for New Orleans Public Service until his retirement. He is survived by his loving, younger brother Charles "Charlie" L. Eustis.

Carty was a genuine New Orleans character and is best known as a fixture at the bar at Ye Olde College Inn for the last 60 years. He is ingrained into the history of College Inn where patrons could dine on the "Cartwright filet" and children could color his caricature on coloring sheets. Stories about Carty at the College Inn are too many to count and include having his head shaved for losing a bet and having an entire excavator bucket filled with cold Bud Light dumped on his head in the parking lot during the Ice Bucket Challenge in the summer of 2014. Speaking of which, Carty never met a cold beer or a pretty lady that he was not attracted to. Cartwright was often absolutely certain of the correctness of something that was totally incorrect, thereby earning him the nickname "Cartwrong." He was the official mascot of the College Inn.

Carty was an avid sports fan and a huge supporter of all Tulane Athletics and his beloved New Orleans Saints. He was a long-time member of the Green Wave Club, a long-time Saints season ticket holder and an original member of Charlie's Saints Marching Club. Baseball was Carty's favorite sport, and he loved traveling the country with his friends to various Major League Baseball venues. In his later years, he immersed himself in learning Japanese so that he could properly pronounce the names of baseball players he drafted onto his fantasy baseball teams. Perhaps because of his rotund body shape, he was drawn to bowling and became an accomplished bowler rolling several perfect 300 games. He was a lifetime member of the Southern Stars Bowling Association and an occasional visitor to the Canal Street Brothel.

Many thanks to the staff of SummerHouse Vista Shores where Cartwright resided for the last several years.
