Wilburta Cartwright ‘Willie’ Locke May 13, 1928 — Jan. 16, 2012 Wilburta Cartwright (“Willie”) Locke, 83, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Oklahoma City and Duncan, passed away on Jan. 16, 2012. Willie was born May 13, 1928, in Washington D.C. to Congressman Wilburn and Carrie Cartwright. Due to her father’s 52 years in elected office, Willie grew up simultaneously in both McAlester and Washington D.C. She always played an integral part in her father’s political career. Her mother is credited with being one of the founders of the University of Oklahoma Music Department and she shared her passion for music with Willie. Willie attended Stephens College and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. She went on to become an elementary school teacher and play violin in the Oklahoma City Symphony. Willie was born the same year as Mickey Mouse and always felt a fond connection to the cartoon character. She loved to create miniature scenes of children’s storybook characters, using small objects found in nature and around the home, for display on the family Christmas tree. Some of Willie’s artistic creations were featured in many Christmas issues of “Better Homes and Gardens” over 23 years, from 1958 through 1981. Willie was talented and clever in so many ways, as well as an upbeat and delightful lady. We thought the world of her and will miss her wonderful laugh and sense of humor. Willie was a devoted wife, mother, stepmother and grandma. She is preceded in death by husband Wendell V. Locke, sister Lynn Cartwright Gordon, brother-in-law Leo Gordon and son-in-law Mike Haftek. With fondest memories, Willie is survived by son R.K. Arnold III and spouse Lynne Gilmore Arnold, of Great Falls, Va.; daughter Carrie Bea Vink and spouse Verlin L Vink, of Scottsdale; niece Tara Gordon of Shadow Hills, Calif.; stepdaughters Diane Siegman and spouse Ron Siegman, of Oklahoma City, Jeanne Millican and spouse Barry Millican, of Midwest City, Anita Haftek Conway and spouse Mike Conway, of Yukon, and Karen Dubbe’ and spouse Jeff Dubbe’, of Choctaw; seven grandchildren, Doni Albright and husband Adam, Derick Millican and wife Jodie, Crystal Locke, Mitchell Haftek, Isaac Millican and wife Amy, Melissa Haftek and Bi Vink; and five great-grandchildren, Avery and Eli Albright, Roland and Rayleigh Millican, and Jackson Locke. Graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery, 7801 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City, with a memorial service to follow at 3 p.m., at Crown Heights Christian Church, 4020 N Western Ave., Oklahoma City, with a gathering to follow.
