My name is Kurt Irving and I got several hobbies. Speaking of hobbies, one of them includes keeping track of non-anime cartoons and so far, I've only seen 165 (I have known cartoons for 26+ years and it would be great if I could talk to long-time cartoon enthusiasts who share the same experience that I do). If you want to know my age, I'll give you a hint, my zodiac is the snake (earth). As you probably know, Valkyria Chronicles is my favorite video game (aside from the two Gungrave games).
How I rate my anime:
7-10 (nice/fantastic/excellent)
4-6 (average/mediocre/tedious)
1-3 (appalling/horrible/unbearable/garbage)
P.S I'm an action comedy fanboy (albeit having a love/hate relationship with shounen) and I love hard bop music. Remember, all entertainment is subjective.
Update: I barely read graphic novels or light novels anyway because I have little time for basic literature
Another update: Let me be frank and tell you that I never liked Kyoto Animation (their anime and what they assume is their absolute best aren't good enough). Sorry but not sorry with absolute sincerity. I.e. that their anime has been boring to me since the 2000s.
2024 update: I'm currently improving my Japanese and ambidextrous writing.
Summer 2024 update: Kiddy Phenil is my other favorite character, I bet most of you dweebs don't even know who she is. Thinking about adding me on Discord? Well then, you must ask first.
Year of the Snake update: Since I started reading Copperhead, I might as well delve into other indie comics. Newer manga have not been given me satisfaction from a theme or narrative standpoint.

Oh ok, I need to see if I can't find that manga and read it. Same!! I want to see the anime. I hope so to, such a good voice actor. Oh OH! JYB is in Twisted Wonderland. XD Sometimes I can't remember all the voice actor names but he's one I instantly recognize when I hear it. So the moment his character spoke I was like "I know that one!" lol.
I had to look up Judith, I couldn't remember what she looked like and then out of curiosity I looked up and Vesperia and saw that it had a switch version. I might have to look into that game. XD
Oh I hate it when they don't really pick a voice actor to closer match the age of a character.
Lol I barely remember anything of Robotech. But yeah there are some really bad dubs sometimes. Been a few times I start watching and dub and I'm so disappointed I switch it back to subtitled.
Yep! Voice actors can definitely make things better.
Think we both have better chances of playing many other things before those two come out T_T.
By the way, I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving this coming Thursday! ^_^
I think I watched Unicorn when it came out, like a decade ago? Why?
Yep, I like JRPGs quite a bit, though not really a fan of turn based. If the story is good, I will play it regardless, but turn based games usually burn me out really fast.
Lol I wouldn't mind doing a ninja costume.
Yep tis the holiday seasons! Ohhh hopefully you can get that Digimon game. I've been playing the demo of it and so far I'm enjoying it.
Ooo I wouldn't mind seeing a remaster of Grandia 3. They might do one. They've already remaster some other old games, so maybe that will come one day.
Hm, Suikoden really sounds familiar but I don't think I've played any of the games. Think there's an anime of it... but don't think I've seen that either. I'll definitely try to watch if they do an adaptation though.
Oh I bet that was daunting to prepare that many characters for a big fight like that. X_X
Oh ok, that actually sounds pretty good. Then I might go ahead and add Lazarus to my list to watch. Lol my poor list just keeps getting bigger on top of the manga and non-anime/manga related novels I trying to read. XD
Very true better just to emulate the original. Have you had a chance to play Tales of Xillia? That was one that piqued my interest at one point.
Elder Scrolls 6.... beginning to think that will never happen. T_T I've been waiting a long time for that come out... or even give me more info of it. I loved the previous ones. And I like Elder scrolls Online but it's just not the same as the single player ones.
By FMA, do you mean Fullmetal Alchemist? Or something else? It's one of my favorite manga.
I'll confess I know almost nothing about Western comics. I just don't care that much about superhero stories in general. If Lazarus is nothing like most of them, maybe I'd like it. But I also don't like overly gritty stories much too, like Berserk is just ok for me. I guess to many of them resort to shocking violence and especially sexual violence, that I just get annoyed. But I liked Joe Abercrombie's books which are somewhat dark, because it didn't seem to try too hard. Does that make sense?
Well, I hope it gets an adaptation for your sake then :)
I did like the horror aspect and liked it, but it's not exactly my favorite thing in the world.
.... Well I never watched Lightyear (nor do I have a desire to watch it) and I haven't exactly watched a lot of movies as I used to (aside from horror movies) , but I uh have no clue on why you brought that up... But I guess I'll take your word.
Way back when I mentioned Majuu Sensen, I originally wanted to talk a bit about it, unfortunately depression got in the way. But I wonder if anyone is genuinely interested of talking about a very obscure work. Through I did really like it since I'm a big fun of Ken Ishikawa works (creator of Getter Robo), however the fan subs were dogshit. So perhaps by the time you fully learn Japanese you'll be able to understand the story fully then I did in my first watch.
However I do have to warn you, despite what I said last time. Apocalypse is not a sequel to the OVA, the OVA ends differently from the original manga, while Majuu Sensen the Apocalypse follows the manga ending.
Besides you be very surprised that there's a lot of christian themes in Majuu Sensen. (So much so that some say that it inspired Evangelion, which I'm not exactly since Anno is a big fan of Ishikawa works and also that manga's ending was considered extremely shocking at the time)
IS Ghost of Yotei related to Ghost of Tsushima? Because I know my husband likes Ghost of Tsushima and I know they were making a second one but I am not sure what it is called.
I wanted to try out Rings of Power, but it is trash you say?
Thank you for wishing me a happy birthday! <3 I had a really nice one surrounded by friends and family. Next up is my moms birthday on November 22nd. My dad tasked me to be in charge of a surprise party for her.
Halloween was fun! We passed out candy and watched Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Did you do anything for it?
It is still pretty warm where I live. But I am sure it will get cold soon. It is 8 at night right now and it is still 64 degrees F outside. But I have been eating all kinds of fall treats lately. Caramel apples, pecan pie, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin cereals, apple cider, and more. I should look into getting a pumpkin pie next. I will eat one for you!
So you got Time Stranger? Which starter Digimon did you go with? I am trying to find someone that started with Gommamon. Everyone I know went either Patamon or DemiDevimon. Man, I really am sorry it takes me so long to get back to you sometimes. You are a good friend for putting in the effort to send me extra messages to remind me I need to reply. Thank you.
I hope you are doing well and that you had a great Halloween! For today, happy Día de los Inocentes.
I’ve never played Suikoden, but it seems like those types of gameplay stories usually require you to play the first game or even check out a manga if it's based on it. I felt that way with Kingdom Hearts, but after the remixes, the story just didn’t make sense to me, haha.
The original Digimon was one of my favorites when I was young. I even collected some Digimon cards with a friend, although many people didn’t know they released playing cards similar to Pokémon cards at that time. Good memories!
I also hope next year is better because the world is becoming crazier, scarier, and just... sigh... that is why I love horror movies/tvseries/books/videogames/anime (Watching "Welcome to Derry" now since I am a fan of Steven King's universe and IT). After all, at least I know it's not real, unlike watching the news, but I digress.
Looking forward to Thanksgiving and the food!!! Plus getting a little break.
I hope you get to have an enjoyable rest of the year.
Take care and talk to you next time :)*waves goodbye*
I loved .hack//SIGN! Tsukasa was my very first cosplay! I still have and love my wall scroll featuring Tsukasa. It's hung up in my bedroom. The music from that series is so fantastic and dreamy. Kajiura Yuki is such a great composer, one of my favorites. I love her music from Noir and Princess Principal, too.
I'm glad you got to finish Suikoden II! I can't remember if I already shared that despite playing the game multiple times, including several using a walkthrough, I have never yet gotten the good ending 😅 Suikoden Tactics was my first tactics-style game, so I never got very far because I was bewildered by the system. That was when I was in junior high school, a loner with no one to help me figure it out. These days, after falling in love with Fire Emblem: Awakening, I love that style of gameplay. I've gotten back into Fire Emblem: Three Houses recently, on my second route. I just love grinding to level up all my characters so I'm not getting very far into the story, lol.
Hear, hear to the busy year! It's been a whirlwind for me! Hopefully it's all good things for you. It's not been all good on my side, but all's well that ends well, so I can't complain!
but yah it's been a while since I last read School Rumble too lol. I keep meaning to finish reading it but I get distracted by other series, and at this point it's been so long I want to start over from chapter 1. FMA is definitely one of those lovely distracting series (in a good way of course haha), but I am in for the long haul and I fully intend to finish FMA this time! Last time I read it was definitely 10+ years ago haha
Ooh, hidden gems sounds amazing with games and comics, I just love the feeling of finding something that is very underrated but knowing in my heart it's a winner. Found any favorites out of those?
I started watching Cat's Eye and I love it so far, haha. Somehow, I feel like my enjoyment of series has gone up in general the past few years and I have no clue why~ but I'm not gonna complain about it haha.
Voltron is weird. Normally, when Anime are changed that drastically from the source, there's a stinker raised, but instead, we ended up with the Voltron multiverse. It may have had to do with the fact those who brought it over were like, "we don't understand a lick of Japanese, but love this series" and thus from the onset went about creating a brand new script for the series from the get go, yet with the full intention of capturing as much of the original intent of GoLions as they could without understanding any Japanese. Not only did they succeed, but Japanese GoLions fans were actually glad inevitable character deaths were lost in translation, since those deaths had not been well-received in the first place.
GoLions was also a product of the time, of a Japan coming off an economic crisis where quite the media produced at the time was very reflective of a lack of hope. The novel Japan Sinks was created during this time, but I'd argue the Anime from 2020 did what Voltron did to GoLions yet where those who created Voltron understood the original intent as they wrote an entirely new script that was honestly more uplifting and child friendly, Japan Sinks 2020 didn't understand the original intent of the original work, including the fact the original work got away with the original premise because of the lack of technology as well as the theory being used for the sci-fi horror having not been debunked at the time.
As for mecha in general, I'd argue the best ones would also classify as Space Opera, which is actually the genre I'm into, not actually the mecha genre. To be classified as Space Opera as emphasis is placed on driving the plot through the characters rather than just the tech involved. Some mecha couldn't be classified as Space Opera, and they tend to be the series that don't leave a lasting impression. GoLions, the only reason it's not a series on the scale of Gundam over in Japan is likely because a lot of the popularity comes from Voltron, and thus it's a franchise multiverse that's continued over here, including a crossover with Macross in comic book form that went over well.
Retro games are fantastic, though I'm better at some than others.
