epa10376578 A handout photo made available by the NASA shows the first of several sample tubes deposited by NASA???s Perseverance rover onto the Martian surface on 21 December 2022, the 653rd Martian day, or sol, of the mission (issued 22 December 2022). According to NASA, Perseverance has been taking duplicate samples from each rock target the mission selects. Based on the architecture of the Mars Sample Return campaign, the rover would deliver samples to a future robotic lander. The depot will serve as a backup if Perseverance cannot deliver its samples. EMBARGOED TO 1900 THURSDAY OCTOBER 27 Undated handout of an artist's impression issued by the Institute of Geophysics of a impact crater on Mars. Issue date: Thursday October 27, 2022. PA Photo. Scientists are analysing the data from two large meteorite impacts on Mars, with the aim to understand more about how the red planet formed. The space rocks crashed into the Martian surface at different times in the latter half of 2021, resulting in two large craters upwards of 130 metres in diameter. Nasa's InSight lander ??? which touched down on Mars in 2018 ??? recorded the vibrations caused by both impacts. The researchers used data from the Insight lander to determine the structure of the crust at depths of between roughly 5 and 30 kilometres below the surface of Mars. See PA story SCIENCE Mars. The Sample Fetch Rover (SFR), affectionately known as Anon, potentially destined for missions on the moon or Mars is put through its paces at a quarry in Milton Keynes. Airbus engineers' quarry testing is essential to the development process, providing a unique and dynamic landscape that cannot be replicated within the Mars Yard test facility at Stevenage, and the event marks the first time all the rover's systems are being tested simultaneously. Picture date: Thursday September 29, 2022. PA Photo. The SFR was intended to collect sample tubes left on the surface of Mars by Perseverance, but earlier this year Nasa and the European Space Agency (ESA) announced it would no longer be needed for this work. See SWNS story SWNAwatch --- A company say their out-of-this-world watch is packed with real MARS dust. Belgium firm Interstellar claim the 'NASA-approved' timepiece features powdered fragments of a meteor flung from the Red Planet. Created in honour of NASA's Perseverance Mars rover mission, the 'NASA x INTERSTELLAR RED3.721' comes with elements of a meteorite discovered in northwest Africa in 2021. A Martian meteorite is a rock that formed on Mars, was ejected from the planet by an impact event, and travelled through interplanetary space before landing on Earth. S?bastien Colen, Interstellar founder, explains: "The meteorites were not brought back to Earth by humans, but thanks to the law of physics."

Illustration of an oblique view of the giant Valles Marineris canyon system on Mars. The Valles Marineris is over 3000 kilometres long and up to 8 kilometres deep, dwarfing the Grand Canyon of Arizona, USA. The canyons were formed by a combination of geological faulting, landslides, and erosion by wind and ancient water flows. The view is looking west, from an altitude of about 2000 kilometres, and shows the canyon filled with low-altitude fog and cloud.

EMBARGOED UNTIL TUESDAY 16.00BST/11.00ET The distribution of 90 million craters on the surface of Mars obtained from the Crater Detection Algorithm. See SWNS story SWNNrock. The world's oldest Martian meteorite has been traced to the precise crater where it originated. Named Black Beauty, it formed almost 4.5 billion years ago and adds to evidence the Red Planet was once habitable. The famous space rock found in the western Sahara formed part of a primordial crust that hosted oceans of water. Now an international team has pinpointed its exact home. They used a supercomputer to track its creation on the red planet in a province known as Terra Cimmeria-Sirenum. The location in the southern hemisphere of the planet has many gullies that could have been carved by flowing rivers. Black Beauty contains more water than other Martian meteorites. The crater Back Beauty is from has been named Karratha after a city in the Pilbara area of Western Australia renowned for its remarkably preserved rock formations.
