Called Starlight Avatar, the light-producing plant has been created by bioengineers in America and glows like a firefly. Bioglow, the St Louis-based company behind the innovation, say that it is the first ever light-emitting plant. Bioengineers used genes from bioluminescent bacteria with a pot plant to create the glowing plant, which was based upon molecular biologist Dr Alexander Krichevsky's work. Founder and research director of plant developer Bioglow, Krichevsky, explains: "The concept if rather quite simple, a glowing plant. If you think about it, what was the most exciting thing that happened in horticulture and ornamental industry in the past thousand years? "Maybe a few new flower colours, maybe a few new scents. The glowing plants are a revolutionary concept, which is long overdue." During the past three decades several plants have been described as having a glowing effect. He adds that these plants were either painted with dye, required chemicals or needed ultraviolet (UV) light to induce a temporary light emission effect. Bioglow's plants are the first autonomously luminescent, plants that emit light on their own without the need for chemicals or UV light. It is a genetically-modified version of a regular pot plant called Nicotiana alata and glows continuously during its lifetime. The company auctioned the first batch of glowing shrubs in January and are accepting orders for further plants which are currently being developed. "Similar to fireflies and other luminous organisms found in nature, the auto luminescent plant's light emission machinery is encoded on a cellular level allowing the plant to constantly emit visible light during its life cy...
