Pic shows: the rescuers pull out the car from water. This is the moment a Lada plunged through thin ice after its owner bet friends he could manage to drive over a frozen lake. The bizarre bet took place next to the lake in the city of Zelenograd in western Russia's Moscow Oblast region. Footage of the incident shows a car driving in the dark on a pond covered with ice. After slowly approaching the edge of the frozen body of water where the ice is thinnest, the driver edges out onto the surface before speeding up and turning round in a sharp circle driving back to the shore. A man making a video in the background can be heard encouraging the driver to go ever further out, but suddenly the ice cracks and the car starts to sink. When the ice cracks, he starts urging his friend to head to the shore but too late. He says: "The ice has cracked, get back, if it breaks youíll have to swim all the way here on your own, I wonít go in there. He then adds: "This is how 200,000 roubles (1,868 GBP) sunk in a pond." Witnesses say that the men, who made a bet, were in the age span of around 18 to 22 years old and most likely had been drinking. Other footage later shows the man who escaped from the sinking car declaring: "I just drowned my Lada. The ice turned out to be too thin." Members of the local emergency services eventually recovered the car from under the water. Now the owner is likely to get a hefty fine for pollution and wreaking havoc in a public place. (ends)
