One of Tinder’s biggest perks? Its massive user base. This was the app that kicked off the whole swiping craze, and yes, it got us all mindlessly flicking left and right. These days, it’s often pegged as a hotspot for casual dating—read: situationships—but that’s not the whole picture. I’ve met plenty of people on Tinder looking for something more serious, and some of those encounters even turned into second, third, and yes, fourth dates.

For queer daters, Tinder has all the inclusive options to make your experience smoother. But the real standout for me? Tinder’s new Double Date feature. You can team up with your bestie for a date, and there are no restrictions on your gender or your crush’s. As a bisexual woman, I could go on a date with my gay male friend, and we’d each be paired with someone perfectly compatible—him with a guy, me with someone of any gender. Total chaos? Maybe. Totally fun? Absolutely.

The app keeps things classic with its swipe-through format, though profiles are a bit lighter on detail compared to some other apps. That said, Tinder is slowly adding more prompts, taking a page from Hinge, so your bio game might just get stronger.

First things first: Grindr isn’t just for men seeking men—who knew? The app bills itself as the world’s largest social network for gay, bi, trans, and queer people. That said, the pool of queer women on there is… let’s just say, shallow. The photo quality felt a bit 2012, and most profiles didn’t give much away beyond a face and maybe an emoji. As a bisexual woman, I also couldn’t match with men interested in women, which felt pretty limiting.

Since I’m clearly not Grindr’s core demographic—despite its claims of inclusivity—I enlisted a gay male friend to help give the app a proper once-over. His experience was night and day compared to mine. For him, Grindr offered an endless pool of options, and he’s been on it for years. That said, even he admits it’s not exactly built for long-term love.

Now in his thirties, he’s using Hinge alongside Grindr, saying the latter is still great for casual connections but doesn’t exactly pave the way to a serious relationship. “It’s all about looks,” he told me, “and the conversation turns sexual within about 30 seconds.” So, if you’re after something fun and fast-paced, Grindr still reigns supreme, but if you’re hunting for The One, you might want to keep scrolling.

We both also found the proximity feature a bit… intense. It can feel a little too revealing, showing people exactly where you are (or close enough) in your neighbourhood. Great for spontaneity, not so great for privacy.

Inclusivity: Over two dozen gender options, and the ability to select interest in multiple as well. 

Let’s turn our attention to one of the UK’s biggest dating sites and see how it stacks up for the queer community. Match is interesting because it blends elements of both Tinder and eHarmony. You’re shown one profile at a time and can swipe or skip. But unlike those apps, Match actually gives you plenty of info upfront, like interests, hobbies, and lifestyle details. Profiles are highly customisable, letting you showcase photos, topics, and your quirks to attract the right people. I loved the personalised recommendations based on my preferences and must-haves—though, full disclosure, I’m not sure I should date another Swiftie!

Match is great for people after long-term relationships, but it does have its quirks. The interface feels outdated, the website can be slow, and filtering options don’t always deliver. Some users report encounters with fake profiles and scams — though I didn’t experience that myself. I did spot a few familiar faces from Hinge and Bumble, which made me feel like I was paying to meet people I could’ve found elsewhere for free.

Thanks to its popularity, I had no shortage of matches, which was admittedly flattering. That said, many of the matches skewed older than my stated age range, so if you’re looking for someone in their twenties, this might not be the place. The user experience also left a bit to be desired—ads pop up frequently, and the layout can feel a little messy, which made browsing less enjoyable over time. 

Seeing who’s viewed your profile can be flattering, but it also means others see if you’ve checked theirs… and didn’t message. Cue the awkward follow-ups from users you weren’t interested in — not exactly the vibe you’re looking for.

I’m a big fan of Feeld, and I’m always surprised it flies under the radar! First things first: this isn’t just a playground for wild, kinky, 50 Shades-style adventures — though if that’s your vibe, you’ll definitely find your crowd here. You can set sexual preferences and kinks to get exactly what you want, from threesomes (MMF, FFM, MMM, FFF,  or any other jumble of letters!) to ethical non-monogamy and beyond.

Speaking of ENM, couples can create linked profiles for full transparency, giving the option to date together or separately. That level of openness is rare in dating apps and a big part of Feeld’s charm.

Even if you’re looking for queer monogamous connections, Feeld attracts a lot of open-minded people who enjoy a different kind of dating space. Profiles feel more authentic, with less pressure to be witty or post endless selfies. That said, photos are often fewer or more anonymous, as users value privacy. Conversations can also get sexual sooner than on other apps, so keep that in mind before diving in. Feeld also doesn’t use the same algorithm-style matching as other platforms, so it can take a while to find someone with similar intentions.

You’ve probably heard of OkCupid, which is a decent space for queer daters. But as a bisexual woman, I had to check out BiCupid: a site dedicated to bisexual, bi-curious, and, well, anyone exploring in between. Don’t let the name fool you, though: it’s welcoming to lesbians, gay, trans, queer, and anyone still figuring things out.

One of the first things I noticed was the app’s robust support for ethical non-monogamy. Couples can create linked profiles, and there are threesome options — though calling participants “unicorns” isn’t exactly popular with everyone. BiCupid also offers advanced filters, 10 different privacy settings, and even video chat features.

Instead of swiping, BiCupid relies on an algorithm that matches users based on interests and personalities. In practice, it feels a little behind the times. The interface could use a refresh, and some of the matches left me wondering if the algorithm was more about who was paying for VIP than actual compatibility.

Finally, the site is still growing, so the user base, especially in the UK, is a little limited. It’s worth exploring if you’re curious, but don’t expect the same buzz as Tinder or Taimi.

HER is renowned for its careful vetting system, designed to filter out catfishes and anyone not ready to treat others with respect. That said, there’s a big push to link your profile to social media accounts. You can still use the app without this, but some features feel a bit limited if you don’t verify that way, which isn’t ideal for anyone wanting to keep their dating life separate from their socials.

HER also makes it easy to highlight your values through Pride Pins, so potential matches immediately know if you’re QPOC, T4T, chapstick or masc lesbians, intersex, and more. You can even showcase your love language, political views, and other personal details to make connections more meaningful.

A standout feature is how effortlessly HER lets you adjust your gender identity. They even have an FAQ explaining how simple it is. This is a welcome relief compared with Bumble or Hinge, where people sometimes claim, “Set the wrong gender and they won’t let me change it!” Whether that’s true or not, HER handles it gracefully.

Finally, HER is packed with educational content, perfect for anyone navigating the sapphic lifestyle for the first time. The app acknowledges that everyone discovers their identity at their own pace. Whether you’re in your twenties, thirties, forties, or beyond, it’s never too late to explore.

Interestingly, eHarmony has long had a bit of an “older crowd” reputation — and while love truly has no age limit, it’s now seeing a real rise among Gen Z and Millennials. I quickly found people around my age on the app (I’m a sprightly 28, in case you were wondering).

The main appeal of eHarmony is its detailed matchmaking system. You start with a very thorough questionnaire that digs into your personality, values, and relationship preferences before showing you curated matches. You even get a little explainer for each one; things like “you both value emotional openness” or “you handle conflict similarly.” Honestly, the time and energy it takes to get through that quiz means you’re unlikely to bump into someone just looking for a one-night stand.

Here’s the catch, though: in my eHarmony review, I gave them four out of five stars, but I’m dropping it down a notch here. While you can indicate interest in men, women, and non-binary users, I was matched almost exclusively with men. Whether that’s down to fewer queer users or just an overwhelming number of male profiles, it does make the experience less rewarding for LGBTQ+ daters, more of a small pond than a sea of options.

Our verdict

Most modern dating apps have come a long way in welcoming queer users, with plenty of gender and sexuality options to choose from. The real trick, though, is finding where your people actually are, because let’s face it, some platforms still feel like walking into a straight bar during happy hour.

Overall, Taimi takes the top spot for its accessibility and community vibe across the entire LGBTQIA+ spectrum. HER is a standout for sapphic daters, while Feeld is perfect for those looking to connect with open-minded, adventurous types.
