Coronavirus lockdown: What to watch this weekend
Netflix is here to save the day this lockdown weekend (Picture: Netflix/BBC)

With the weekend coming up and absolutely nothing to do, what better way to pass the time than with a glass (or several) of wine while binge-watching all the hot new TV and Netflix releases?

The quick spread of the coronavirus resulted in a nationwide lockdown, meaning pubs, cafe’s restaurants and all our usual weekend go-to’s were shut down indefinitely.

On the bright side, there are a few new amazing shows coming out that will make our social distancing weekend a little bit better.

So grab your friends (over the phone, of course) and make them get Netflix Party so you can all watch the newest shows together.

Ozark (Season 3)

Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) are back for season three of Netflix’s Ozark today.

Wendy and Marty have chosen to stay put in Osage Beach, Missouri, to scrub money for cartel boss Omar Navarro (played by Felix Solis) using their new riverboat casino The Missouri Belle.

Their big decision comes when deciding whether to lay low or to expand, a discussion they can’t seem to agree on.

The official Netflix synopsis for season three reads: ‘The casino is up and running, but Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) are fighting for control of the family’s destiny.

‘Marty preaches keeping the status quo. Aided by an alliance with Helen and drug cartel leader Omar Navarro (Felix Solis), Wendy plots for expansion. But when Wendy’s brother Ben (Joseph Sikora) comes into town, everyone’s lives are thrown into chaos.’

If you’re in the mood for a gritty crime drama, Ozark is the perfect way to start off your weekend.

And if you’ve never watched the series before, it’ll only take 30 hours to get through the entire thing, so might as well get started.

Saturday Night Takeaway

All our favourite TV shows might have been cancelled or put on hold, but at least we have Saturday Night Takeaway to help us forget about the chaos currently going on in the world.

The ITV show might have aired their last live show last weekend, but Ant and Dec are returning to our screens with a pre-recorded episode showing the best bits.

What better way to lift our spirits than to watch the goofiest, wildest, and strangest moments of the series?

Don’t we all love a ‘best bits’ compilation? We know we do.

Saturday Night Takeaway airs at 7pm on ITV this Saturday (obviously).

The Nest

The Nest
The Nest kicked off on BBC One last week (Picture: BBC)

Ready for more drama? The Nest is BBC One’s new series focusing on a couple who are struggling to conceive.

The new five-part thriller is based around the question of how far people will go to get what they want.

Emily (Sophie Rundle) and her husband Dan (Martin Compston) have tried everything to get pregnant but after a few miscarriages, Dan’s older sister Hilary agrees to act as a surrogate.

After a car accident involving questionable 18-year-old Kaya (Mirren Mack), Hilary begins to miscarry and so begins the rollercoaster of dark twists and painful truths.

The first episode is already out, so now is the perfect time to catch up before the new one, which airs on BBC One at 9pm this Sunday.

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness

Joe Maldonado-Passage aka Joe Exotic. Tiger King documentary (Picture: Netflix)
Joe Exotic is patiently waiting for you to watch the series (Picture: Netflix)

We’re cheating a little bit here with Netflix’s insane docu-series Tiger King as it came out on 20 March, but it’s worth it.

The documentary will put you through every emotion possible, mainly shock and confusion.

The seven-part series follows the war between Joe Exotic, eccentric owner of G.W. Zoo, and the equally eccentric Carole Baskin, animal activist and lead at Big Cat Rescue, who was trying to take him down.

Seeing a woman’s arm was literally caught on camera being ripped off by a tiger in the first episode alone, the documentary covered literally the most bonkers plot twists you couldn’t make up if you tried.

This included hundreds of tigers, a country music career (that may well have been faked), polygamy, a mysterious disappearance, a murder-for-hire plot, potential murder of animals, tragic deaths, drug kingpins, and the black market sale of exotic animals.

If that’s not enough to get you to finally watch the series, nothing will.

What more could you want?
