Made-Up: how to fake eyelash

Video Video November 30, 2016 2:30

False eyelashes can effortlessly glam up your look and they’re not as tricky as you think once you’ve mastered the technique.

I often describe false eyelashes as being like high heels without the pain as they instantly and effortlessly dress up a look.

False lashes range from individual clusters to the more traditional strips.

You can use the individual ones to add subtle volume and a little length, or try the traditional variety for a natural or full-on look, depending on the style you go for.

For those who are new to false eyelashes, I recommend buying a few sets to play with so you can get use to applying them.

It helps to have a backup set too, in case one gets ruined in your attempts to master the application technique.

Step One – Brush through your lashes

Make sure the lashes are clean and brush through them before you start.

Step Two – Get your lashes

For this video, I used Fleur & Fabulous lashes by Eylure, they are super soft and easy to apply.

I am also a big fan of Ardell’s Demi Wispies, which are perfect for parties and events and won’t make you look too overdone.

Remove the false lashes from their packaging and put them next to your eyes to check that they are the correct length.

They are too long if the band is poking the inner corner of your eye or if it extends past your outer lashes.

If you need to trim the eyelashes, use eyelash scissors like these curved ones from Morphe Brushes and trim from the outer edge of the lashes.

Step Three – Apply eyelash glue

I know lash companies will hate me for saying this, but most of their glue isn’t great.

I swear by Duo Adhesive – the lashes never lift or come off.

If you are right-handed, put a small blob of glue on the top of your left hand (do the opposite if you are left-handed).

Let it sit for just a few minutes until it is a little tacky.

Once the glue is tacky, take your false lashes and run the band through the glue, be sure to get enough glue on the strip and both edges.

Step Four – Apply the eyelashes

We hope you have a steady hand! (Picture: Mariam Jensen)

Some people find it really easy to apply eyelashes with fingers but I find it much easier to use an eyelash applicator or a pair of tweezers, like these ones from Browtician, to get them right on the lash line.

In the video, I demonstrated how to use both tools for precise application.

Be sure to get the lashes as close as you can to the lash line using either of the tools and squeeze the false eyelashes into your own lashes.

The eyelash glue is white at first – do not worry, after a few minutes the glue will dry clear.

If the glue worries you, pop a little eyeliner or a dark eyeshadow on the lash line to cover it.

Step Five – Apply a little mascara

Once the lashes are in place and the glue has dried, apply a few coats of your favourite mascara to blend your own lashes into the false eyelashes.

I would keep the application on the light side if you’d like to try and reuse the false eyelashes.

How to remove the eyelashes

When you need to remove the lashes, gently pull the lashes off from the outer corner of the eye.

Pick off the excess glue from the lashes and put them back into the tray they came in so they keep their curved shape.

If the eyelashes are looking pretty battered and the band is too straight, I would say it’s time to bin them and get a new pair.

Lastly, never wash your lashes, wet them, or use makeup remover on them if you are hoping to get more than one use out of them.
