Wikidata For Wikimedia Projects/AddIssue

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

We are trying to understand why community members from any Wikimedia project connect to Wikidata.

  • What issues do they encounter?
  • Are there ways the projects could be linked differently?

We aim to enhance these integrations in areas where they are needed and wanted by the community.

This space is to report those issues and collect community concerns anywhere that Wikidata is currently, or could be, integrated to other Wikimedia projects and to collaboratively discuss their potential for further development.

Description of issue

[edit]

In this section, I describe the problem, such as how it interrupts or hinders my workflow(s).
I may have ideas on how Wikidata could help. If I know, I can enter details on what functionality or technical details are required to make the idea a reality.
If the issue or idea has previously been discussed within the community, I would mention that here with any relevant links to the discussion / talk / project pages.
If I have multiple issues, or this issue is one of a chain of related issues, I remember to submit them separately and link them with Wikitext.

Description of issue

[edit]

Confusing UI and error message for editing Wikidata interlanguage links towards redirects when the destination of that redirect already has another wikidata entry.

Please improve the shown error message as suggested below.

Currently this error message is unintuitive and confusing because it doesn't mention anything about the actual page a user tried to add nor the fact that this message isn't a glitch/error but intentionally talking about the target of the redirect.

It could be improved by either separating it from the error message that is shown when a user tries to add a page that already is attached to another wikidata object directly OR by adding a 3rd bullet point between these two like:

In case you're trying to link towards a redirected page, see en:Wikipedia:Wikidata#Interlanguage_links_for_redirects for details on how to mark this as intentional and bypass this warning.

Furthermore I'd also like to point out that the current button for adding these labels is everything but obvious.

The bottom green arrow points to the badge selector icon which can be used to add badges. The top red arrow points to the <tvar name="1">intentional sitelink to redirect (Q70894304)</tvar> badge.

Therefore would it be possible to make it more obvious? As currently it resembles more a visual indicator for the wiki page title entry field as opposed to a clickable button. Like e.g. by labeling it or something?
