Add Captions to WPTV Videos

Help make WordPress.tv videos accessible by adding captions. You’ll pick a video, create a caption file, and upload it for review.

Steps

  1. Download a video that needs captions. Browse WordPress.tv and choose one that says “Subtitle this video ” in the sidebarSidebar A sidebar in WordPress is referred to a widget-ready area used by WordPress themes to display information that is not a part of the main content. It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any where in the theme., then download it.

  2. Transcribe the video. Generate a transcript in the video’s original language. The handbook page lists recommended free tools and how to use them.

  3. Proofread. Automatic transcription tools make mistakes, especially with names, technical terms, and unclear audio. Fix them before you save.

  4. Save as TTML. WordPress.tv only accepts TTML caption files. The guide explains how to convert your file.

  5. Upload your caption file. Click “Subtitle this video” on the video’s WordPress.tv page, choose your file, and select the language.

  6. Post in #wptv that you’ve submitted captions, with a link to the video. This helps moderators find it and lets you get feedback, especially for any encoding issues with non-English subtitles.

Contribution checklist

  • Captions proofread and saved as TTML
  • Captions uploaded to the video’s WordPress.tv page
  • Posted in #wptv with a link

What happens next

A moderator will review your captions. If no response after 2–3 weeks, ask in #wptv.

When you’re ready, pick another video — there are always more that need captions.
