Currently work is done on documentation on focus management, alt text, WCAG intro, business accessibility, and legislation.

General Updates

@joedolson shared many updates, with a few items still being worked on.
Only one accessibility ticket remains open for the WordPress 7.0 milestone (likely won’t make it), 32 tickets were closed for 7.0, focus will shift to accessibility goals for 7.1 after RC1, and RCRelease Candidate A beta version of software with the potential to be a final product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge. is the key time to review and fix accessibility issues in new features before final release.

Real-time collaboration needs accessibility testing (especially with screen readers); contributors should test RTC with multiple users editing simultaneously, coordinate testing with @joedolson, and also review visual revisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. Working Group Updates

Documentation

The team removed most of the Accessibility Handbook content from the Make Accessibility site and replaced it with pointers linking to the new documentation. This change was made to avoid the need to maintain two separate sets of documentation. The remaining content focuses on information about how contributors can get involved and contribute to the Accessibility Team.

General Updates

@joedolson shared many updates, with a few items still being worked on.

  • Tickets that already have patches but have not yet been committed should ideally be either committed or punted within the week.
  • Early testing of patches is highly valuable and helps move things forward more quickly. Overall, the project is in good shape, although there are still a few tickets that need to be completed.

Gutenberg

@joedolson shared that GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ has introduced many changes in this release, making testing during the betaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. • The top priority should be testing the output of any new blocks, as those are the most difficult to modify after release, though there are also several new interfaces to review.
  • Contributors are encouraged to explore the release features and test them thoroughly, including navigating without a mouse, checking control names, and enabling visible label features. General accessibility testing guidance is available, and since each feature may require a different approach, specific testing instructions may be provided when needed. Some features may already have their own testing instructions available.

Clarification:

  • Default themes are required to meet WCAGWCAG WCAG is an acronym for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. WP A11y Docs update December 2025 and January 2026

This update informs you about:

  • new documentation;
  • user feedback on the content structure;
  • WCAGWCAG WCAG is an acronym for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. These guidelines are helping make sure the internet is accessible to all people no matter how they would need to access the internet (screen-reader, keyboard only, etc) https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21/.-EM audit on the website;
  • plans for February.

New documentation

Amber Hinds and Joe Dolson wrote and published documentation for the new accessibility-ready tag guidelines for WordPress themes:

The documentation about web forms is almost ready, new is Provide help,
with:

User testing

From user testing by Dutch frontent developers, we got ideas for a better organisation of the content structure. We are working on less items in the main menu and better in-page navigation to related content. That way content is better findable and can be found in multiple ways, not only by the search option or the main menu.

WCAG-EM audit

The website wpaccessibility.org got an official WCAG-EM audit, the site passes the audit for WCAG 2.2 AA compliance. We created an accessibility statement for the website.

Work for February ’26

  • Finish the reorganisation content
  • Add a reading guide
  • Finish all documentation about forms, next is “Focus management in forms”.
  • Start with the documentation for the section Content and images
  • Rian will give a presentation about the WP A11yAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities.
