My little iCal event/todo manipulator is loose and available from my Python Bits page: http://orca.mojam.com/~skip/python/ It allows you to add or print iCal events and todos from the command line. You can also feed appropriately formatted email messages to it and turn them into todos or events. Skip

Guido has just announced (at his PyCon keynote) that the new web site (see beta.python.org) is going live a week from tomorrow (or Sunday, March 5), and has requested help migrating the content. I just checked and of course the "old" Macintosh content is present on the beta site (as well as an unfortunate item on the main download page indicating that only 2.3 is available for download on Mac OS X). There is info at <http://psf.pollenation.net/cgi-bin/trac.cgi> on how to contribute to the new site. It looks like the content is stored in a subversion repository. universal binary installer, take 1

I've placed a DMG with an installer for a universal build of python 2.4.2. This is an initial release of this installer, there are probably issues with it. This installer features: - a universal binary of Python.framework - readline 5.1 - sleepycat db 4.4 - IDLE with Mac keybindings - Python Documentation, both in IDLE and pydoc - pythonw and python are equivalent - the installer will update your shell profile if needed Known issues: - "regrtest -uall" crashes somewhere in test_db3 (bus error) - I haven't tested this version on Intel or OSX 10.3 yet. - This version cannot build extensions on OSX 10.3, or any other system without Xcode 2.2.1 and the 10.4u SDK. Once you install 2.4.1, does everything python-related just automatically start working with it, or do you need to re-install packages like appscript, PyFIT, and so on that have installed themselves off of /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/lib/python2.3/site-packges/... ? (Will the installers for PyFIT, appscript, etc, do the right thing if run after installing 2.4.1?) Do you need to set up any environment variables to specify that the newer python is to be used instead of the old one? (if so, how do you set that up?)

My interest in the universal build of 2.4.2 has gotten less abstract, because I just (just) got my Intel iMac. I guess I *might* figure out how to build Python 2.4 for myself, though it would be guaranteed to produce a lot of messages to list asking dumb questions . . . So I'm wondering if the binary installer is still looking very close? Or would it be smarter for me to download the current 2.4.1 PPC version and run under Rosetta for a while? (It will work, right?) One project I anticipate soon is following the recipe to compile the debugger part of WingIDE for Intel Macs, since apparently all of Wing works except that. Charles

Yes, your message arrived. Several times. :-) I'm guessing you've probably started stuffing things into directories where you shouldn't be messing around. In general, on OS X, if it starts with /System or /usr, leave it alone, except for /usr/local. In particular, don't go messing with the system install of Python 2.3. The general way of adding stuff so that Python can find it is to add it to PYTHONPATH (not PATH). Don't go deleting modules or moving them around; anything that comes in the Python framework should be left the heck alone. If you've been mucking around in the system Python frameworks, you may have borked it. It may be safest just to reinstall OS X. Next time, when you get import failures, try adding to PYTHONPATH. the readme that comes with the downloaded disk image from this URL: http://python.org/ftp/python/2.4.1/MacPython-OSX-2.4.1-1.dmg says "This package will install MacPython 2.4.1 for Mac OS X 10.3." but the link is supposed to be the installer for 10.4 according to ... If you do a Framework install, you will have an empty site-packages directory here: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/python2.4/ site-packages Normally I use fink to install stuff like Numeric and Pmw and Scientific, so I just make a symbolic link like this: 1. If the site-packages directory is empty, remove it. 2. Replace it with a symbolic link like this: sudo ln -s /sw/lib/python2.4/site-packages Library/Frameworks/ Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/python2.4/site-packages If you were using the original system Python2.3, it's site-packages directory resides at /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/lib/ python2.3/site-packages locate site-packges should find everything on your system.
