Speed issues with Applet/Applications?

Hi, I wrote a script which allows me to decompress from a .ZIP file, and appropriately sizing names of files that are longer than 31 characters. However the problem I am encountering, is that when I run the script in the Python IDE, it runs at full speed. When I run the script as a standalone application or applet, then it runs VERY SLOW! I am using Python 2.1, and I am using running this script on a PowerG4. So I am wondering if someone else has had this problem when using the application or applet, and/or if there is a good solution to this problem.

Building mxDateTime for Python 2.0

I am trying to re-compile the mxDateTime shared library to let me use DateTime in Python 2.0 -- the shared library provided throws exception on import about using the wrong version. I have never compiled any type of shared library before, so girding my loins and firing up CW 5 I set up a shared library project and: 1. included the mxDateTime.c code 2. included stub libraries PythonCore and MSL ShLibRuntime.Lib Result: -- Link failure, could not find function 'floor' I knew this is a standard C function, so I threw the stub MathLib into the pot and cooked. Got a bunch of warnings about duplicate definitions of math functions (in PythonCore and MathLib). Decided to ignore warnings. Successfully made the shared library, successfully imported DateTime into Python 2.0 (actually 2.0b1). However, the test script for mxDateTime failed an assertion. Basically, a function DateTimeFromTicks, which uses the floor function, fails to give predicted results. My question: Am I including the correct library in my project to get the "right" version of floor? Thanks, Vince Marchetti

MacPy 2.1: re module error in IDE

I just reported a fatal bug (well, fatal for me in my line of work) in the sre module over at SourceForge (#437472). The short of it is that the recursion limit bug present in sre as of Python 2.0 is still present in the MacPython implementation, despite being fixed as of Python 2.0.1 for Windows (and other platforms?). Because of this, I'm forced to revert to use of the pre module instead. Unfortunately, I cannot use the pre module and Just Van Rossum's wonderful IDE at the same time. When pre is used instead of sre, the python interpreter generates an error when booting up the IDE that requires a force-quit before I can proceed to use my Mac in any fashion whatsoever. It's not clear to me if I should, since the cause of the IDE bug is really a bug with sre that limits its usefulness. The IDE loads fine with sre active, but sre is broken. pre is not broken, but when it's active the IDE does not function. If anyone can respond to this issue, I'd appreciate it, but please note that I'm very much a self-taught, amateur programmer who's really only starting to use Python. And I haven't joined this list yet because the detail of the majority of archived threads are generally beyond my ken. Thanks in advance. If by "filehandle" you mean "MacOS Filehandle" there's little choice but writing it out to file. The macos API knows very little about Python strings or the Python API. Strange question.....string -> Filehandle

Folks, I'm going to ask a slightly strange question... I'm using a procedure (3rd party), that I'd prefer not to modify... But it requires either a filename or a filehandle to be passed, so that it can read the material out of the file. But what I need to process is an XML data stream that I've already read in from the socket.... Sure I could go redesign it, so that this routine automatically reads it, but this procedure is rarely used... I've glanced, but didn't see a way to make the string "appear" to be a filehandle.... I was tossing around the idea of opening a TEMPORARYFILE (errors module?) writing the contents, and then passing the handle to the routine, but.... that seemed less elegant then I'd like... - Benjamin

Have you tried your script under PythonInterpreter in stead of the IDE? Does it then run slow or fast? Python bindings for 'Cocoa'?

Hello, does anybody know if TipTop.com is still in business? Their site seems to be down and I can see pages only when cached in Google or so. They used to have a product suite named Objective-Every- thing, including Objective-Python (but also -Tcl and -Perl), that I assume let you write application code in a socalled scripting language where the former NeXTSTEP and now Cocoa expects Objective-C (now also Java, I think). After just browsing O'Reilly's Cocoa book I am amazed to see even better versions of those Project and Interface Builder apps I've formerly used on the NeXT and thought it would be really cool, if there was a bridge between Objective-C (especially Cocoa's Foundation/App Kit and Python), maybe via Jython? It turned out that fixing the many packages dependent on them to link against the framework instead of a library was more effort than using a framework was worth. Using libraries instead of frameworks greatly increases the chance of random Unix software building with a minimum of needed changes. According to a post Wilfredo Sanchez made on the Darwin Development mailing list, the standard policy now is to leave any pre-existing Unix packages as libraries for compatibility. New or OS X specific code should go in frameworks, I believe. For Python, there probably isn't much value in keeping such Unix compatibility - there simply isn't as much software trying to build against a Python shared library as there is for Perl or Tcl. What little pain this would cause is easily outweighed by the benefits of having Python be a full-fledged peer with the higher levels of OS X. Colin
