This study investigated relationship between parental involvement and learning motivation of unde... more This study investigated relationship between parental involvement and learning motivation of undergraduates in Kwara State University. A descriptive survey of the correlation type design was adopted and simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 402 undergraduates in Kwara State University (KWASU). Parental Involvement and Learning Motivation of Undergraduates Questionnaire (PILMUQ) was used as an instrument for data collection and reliability coefficients of 0.83 and 0.88 were obtained. Data analysis was done using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and Correlation Matrix. The findings revealed a significant relationship between parental involvement and learning motivation among undergraduates of Kwara State University. Gender, mode of living, religion and family types significantly not predict both parental involvement and learning motivation among undergraduates of Kwara State University. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that parents should actively engage in their children's academic pursuits by providing emotional support, monitoring progress, and fostering a positive learning environment. Undergraduates should develop goal-setting, time management, and stress resilience skills to navigate academic challenges. Counselling units can support this by providing tailored programmes, workshops, and online resources to promote academic success and overall well-being, regardless of gender, mode of living, religion and family types.

This study examined strategies for coping with suicidal ideation as expressed by polytechnic stud... more This study examined strategies for coping with suicidal ideation as expressed by polytechnic students in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study employed the descriptive survey design. A sample of 450 students was randomly selected and administered questionnaires across various faculties. However, only 443 responses were properly retrieved and analysed for this study. A research instrument, titled: "Strategies for Coping with Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SCSIQ)", was used to collect data from the respondents. The content validity of the instrument was done by five experts from the Department of Counselling and Human Development Studies at the University of Ibadan and the reliability was established using test re-test reliability method, which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.79. The data collected were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that polytechnic students cope with suicidal ideation by seeking support from friends when feel overwhelmed, seeking professional counselling services when in distress, and engaging in physical activities (e.g., sports, exercise) to improve their mood. Findings also indicated that there were no significant differences in the strategies for coping with suicidal ideation as expressed by polytechnic students in Oyo State based on age and religion. However, there were significant differences in the strategies for coping with suicidal ideation as expressed by polytechnic students in Oyo State based on gender and place of residence. It was therefore, recommended that students struggling with suicidal ideation should seek help from friends for support, access professional counselling services, engage in physical exercises and relaxation techniques, and set achievable goals to mitigate academic frustration and cope more effectively. Guidance counsellors, social workers, academic advisors, and mental health professionals should provide support services, including mental health counselling, academic advising, social skills training, and guidance, without hesitation to students struggling with suicidal ideation in school.

The study investigated awareness of entrepreneurship opportunity among preservice counsellors in ... more The study investigated awareness of entrepreneurship opportunity among preservice counsellors in Kwara State. Descriptive design was employed for them study with the population of 7,693 and simple random technique was used to select 402 respondents for the study from the targeted population. The instrument was a researcher-designed questionnaire, titled: "Awareness of Entrepreneurship Opportunity AmongPreservice Counsellors Questionnaire" (AEOPCQ). The reliability was ascertained by using test-retest method with a coefficient of 0.88. The data collected were analysed using frequency and percentage, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The findings revealed a low level of awareness (75.6%) among preservice counsellors regarding entrepreneurship opportunity in the counselling profession in Kwara State, while 24.4% had received education or training on counselling entrepreneurship. Findings showed further that there were no significant differences in the awareness of entrepreneurship opportunity among preservice counsellors in Kwara State based on gender and level of education. However, there was a significant difference in the awareness of entrepreneurship opportunity among preservice counsellors in Kwara State based on age. The study however concluded that there were few preservives counsellors are aware of the career opportunities in counselling profession. Based on the conclusion and findings of the study, it was recommended that there is need for integration of entrepreneurship education into counselling programmes in Kwara State to equip preservice counsellors with necessary knowledge and skills. Also, mentorship programmes and practicum/internship opportunities should be established in schools to pair preservice counsellors with experienced counselling entrepreneurs, providing guidance and support.

This study investigated the influence of self-concept on interpersonal relationship of secondary ... more This study investigated the influence of self-concept on interpersonal relationship of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State. The moderating variables used are sex, class level and family type. Descriptive survey research method was employed in the study while the simple and stratified sampling techniques were adopted to draw a total of 600 students. The instrument used was a structured questionnaire titled "Influence of Self-concept on Interpersonal Relationship Questionnaire" (ISIRQ), which was developed by the researchers and possessed a reliability coefficient of 0.76. A research question and three null hypotheses were generated and the data collected were analysed using the measure of central tendency and ttest statistical method. All hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level. The results thus revealed that self-concept negatively influenced interpersonal relationship of secondary school students. There is no significant difference in the influence of self-concept on interpersonal relationship of secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis based on class level but significant difference existed based on sex and family type. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended among others that school counsellors should synergise with other stakeholders in education to help students enhance their self-concepts in order to improve on their interpersonal relationship
