The social bases of the Chilean Christian Democrat Party: boom-fall (1958-2017) The Chilean PDC h... more The social bases of the Chilean Christian Democrat Party: boom-fall (1958-2017) The Chilean PDC has had a clear electoral fall. In the elections of 1973-months before the fall of democracy-PDC achieved about 33 per cent of the votes, similar to that obtained in the first free elections after the dictatorship of General Pinochet (1973-1990). In the last elections of 2017, meanwhile, PDC got only 10.3 per cent. This trend opens a series of questions. Who are the PDC's supporters? Is there continuity in its support bases from 1958 to 2017? Based on several surveys and aggregate electoral data at the community level, we note a surprising continuity in the profile of their voters. They tend to be Catholics, with political positions of center and-although with fluctuations-coming from the rural world. The dilemma for the PDC is that Catholicism has declined in Chile, the center has faded and the rural population has retreated.

En este artículo se analiza el deterioro electoral del Partido Demócrata Cristiano (pdc) chileno,... more En este artículo se analiza el deterioro electoral del Partido Demócrata Cristiano (pdc) chileno, que cayó del 26% de los votos en las elecciones inaugurales de la democracia en 1989, al 4.2% en las legislativas de 2021. Sugerimos tres factores explicativos. Primero, que si bien la base electoral del pdc siempre fue predominantemente católica, desde mediados de la primera década de los dos mil, los partidos de derecha han competido con dicho partido y con éxito parcial en este núcleo de electores. Segundo, que dicho partido ha sido históricamente de centro, pero desde fines de los noventa ha enfrentado la competencia de los partidos de izquierda por estos votantes. Tercero, que las facciones internas del pdc pasaron de una dinámica cooperativa a una disruptiva, con acelerados cambios de directivas y fuga de militantes. Malos resultados para las elecciones presidenciales de 2017 y 2021, con un 5.9% y un 11.6%, respectivamente.
