See, that’s what the app is perfect for.

Sounds perfect Wahhhh, I don’t wanna

ICE Kills More Americans than Illegal Immigrants

I posted the above on Threads, and some folks questioned whether this could actually be true. So let me run you through the math. Granted, some of these numbers are best estimates. Undercounting is probably happening on both sides of the argument. But when you see how outlandishly far apart the outcome is, you’ll realize that the statement is absolutely true.

Estimates of the number of illegal…

NEO on iOS

Lots of people have been asking, and it’s finally here. In Beta, anyway.

If you install Apple’s TestFlight software on your iPad (it’s the app they use for allowing you to beta test Apple apps), you can then use this link to join the NEO Pocket iOS testing group:

https://testflight.apple.com/join/TWBXgyAa

That should download NEO to your device, and then you can start testing!

If you want NEO…

NEO for Screenplays!

This has been the most-asked-for feature for NEO, and I’ve been working on it in secret for a while now. It’s rough, and it’s going to be a kinda-hidden feature until it’s been stress-tested, but if you want to write a screenplay in NEO, now you can!

To start one, right click the “new document” icon on any shelf and choose “New Script.” Type in your title and hit enter. NEO will give you a scene…

Regulations and Retreats

I foresee a near future where groups of people do with mental labor what the Amish did with physical labor, which is to say, “Here is where we draw the line. We choose to live on the this side of it.”

I’ve been a big fan of the Amish for a couple decades now, mostly as a distant observer, not as someone who actually knows what the hell he’s talking about. What I know of the Amish began in…

The AI Bubble Explained

Four huge misconceptions in the AI space, told not very briefly:

First misconception: AI is just doing math. There’s a quote making the rounds about how an algorithm can never gain consciousness because it’s just math describing a thing, and this would be like the formulas for gravity suddenly exerting force on mass. This is a bad take for a few reasons. To start with, we don’t know how…

NEO - Fiction without Friction

Sorry, couldn’t help myself. I was tempted to make “Fiction without Friction” the tag line for NEO, but it’s only (kinda) clever the first time you hear it. I’ll (probably) never say it again.

I’ve been blogging about NEO for over ten years now. I’ve been writing exclusively inside NEO for most of this year. Quite a few authors I know have adopted NEO as their go-to for getting that rough draft…

Second Chances

John Joseph Adams and I have edited at least six books together. Is it more? I can’t remember. There was the Apocalypse Triptych from 2014. And the Dystopia Triptych from 2020. Both trilogies gathered dozens of our favorite authors and humans to tell three stories about the before, during, and after of some calamity.

The Apocalypse Triptych was a huge success. My favorite thing about publishing…

This Could’ve Been an Email

I get a lot of messages from lots of sources — most of them I don’t even see. Emails, DMs, comments from this site’s “contact me” form, etc. I can’t respond to all of them, but between other things it’s fun to answer a question or tell someone thanks. The best is when I’m in my inbox already and a new email comes in from a reader and I respond RIGHT AWAY. That usually gets a funny response.

The…

Okay, what now?

Whew. I feel like I can breathe, now that the last episode has aired. So much to keep in while you all were watching the weekly releases. So much to talk about now while we wait for season 4 to air!

Speaking of which, Apple announced today the release date. July 9th! Only ten months away. That’s super fast in this new age of prestige streaming shows.

It leaves just enough room to read the books…

Season Three - Episode Ten

The finale of SILO season three lands tomorrow night on AppleTV (Thursday at 9pm Eastern). I’ve watched this episode four times already. There aren’t many episodes of TV that’ve ever made me want to do that. I’m already itching to watch it again.

I have a difficult time praising things I create myself, like my books or short stories. It’s a lot easier to rave about the TV show because it’s the…
