Caenis is a mission-exclusive NPC and an antagonist on Amphoreus. She first appears in Trailblaze Mission A Cleansing of Gold.
Profile[]
Caenis was a member of the Council of Elders of Okhema. She originally appears as a politician concerned with the people, intent on keeping the Chrysos Heirs in check due to their status as demigods.
In truth, she was the twenty-seventh incarnation of the original Caenis, a Cleaner dating back to the Chrysos War. She harbored an intense and ruthless hatred of the Heirs, seeing them as highborn who thought they were above mortals. This hatred would not only lead her to kill many Heirs during the war and beyond; she would also use alchemical arts to implant memories of her original self into her successors so as to continue persecuting them. She is especially aggravated by Aglaea and her political power and acumen.[1]
History[]
In her first appearance, she attempts to sneak up on Aglaea in the Garden of Life. She admonishes Aglaea for manipulating her spies and scheming through ways against the Council's regulations. She reiterates to her that the Chrysos Heirs are only temporarily given authority through the consent of the Council and wishes to see the prophecy crumble so that the power can return back to the people of Okhema.[2]
When Anaxa met with Caenis, he and Castorice agreed to assist her cause, much to her delight. However, this was actually a ruse in order for him to discern the truth behind Era Nova. In the ensuing debate, Anaxa initially pledged to support the Flame-Chase Journey, much to her anger, but he then retracted his support. Anaxa then told the assembled crowd the truth behind Era Nova and that Caenis and the Okheman Council allowed him to plant a Coreflame in himself, which was considered blasphemous. Caenis denied responsibility, claiming that she didn't know and that Anaxa had done so himself. She asked Lygus if he was going to let the accusation slide, but Lygus simply told her that he was only observing and that the truth would be shown in time. Lygus then proceeded to let Aglaea decide, and she decreed that a committee would investigate the accusation, much to her displeasure.[3]
Angered at the humiliation brought by Anaxa, Caenis deployed several Cleaners in a bid to stop the Flame-Chase Journey, sending four at Dan Heng, three at Phainon and the Trailblazer, and had another three with her to confront Aglaea. She accused the demigod of neglect and attempted to force her hand by threatening its people, though this resulted in Aglaea simply fulfilling her fated prophecy. In truth, after the debate, Aglaea had realized that her humanity was fading and in order to stomp out the corruption within Okhema, she needed to force their hand. Her assassination of Aglaea resulted in swift and severe backlash against her and the Cleaners, essentially making them pariahs and forcing them into hiding.[4]
Once the Dawn Device's power was extinguished, Caenis, now mentally unstable, returned to Dawncloud, where she knelt in prayer in front of what was supposedly Kephale's Coreflame, begging the Titan to forgive the "lowly" children of humanity and that the sins of the Chrysos Heirs transformed into divine punishment. Phainon, Dan Heng, and the Trailblazer opened the casket, only to find a pot within, which he interpreted as Cipher successfully moving the Coreflame away to a safe location. Caenis mocked the group, claiming that she had moved it away, before Black Tide Creatures appeared behind her and attacked her, killing her in the process.[5]
In the #33,550,337th Eternal Recurrence, Cerydra has the Caenis of that era killed by Darius and offers her corpse as a gift to the Trailblazer.[6][7]
