It’s Still Possible

All the remaining Southern matches are on Thursday and Friday when the forecast seems OK, so matches should be won/lost – or tied. Surrey have beaten Somerset tonight, so that every side except Glamorgan can still qualify from the south (Sussex already through). That means there are a number of ‘four-pointers’, which can help Hampshire.
Matches in italics on Thursday, others on Friday:
Sussex 19 – v Gloucs (H) – Max 21
Gloucs 14 – v Kent (A) v Sussex (A) – Max 18
Kent 14 – v Gloucs (H) v Essex (A) Max 18
Somerset 13 – v Middx (H) – Max 15
Middx 13 – v Hants (A) v S’set (A) – Max 17
Surrey 12 – v Essex (H) – Max 14
Hants 11 – v Middx (H) v Glams (A) – Max 15
Essex 11 – v Surrey (A), v Kent (A) – Max 15
Glams 5 – v Hants (H)

If Hampshire do qualify it will be the first time they have done so, winning fewer than 50% of their matches
Comment by pompeypop August 27, 2019 @ 8:17 pmAnd if they end up taking the 4th qualifying place then a nice long trip to Durham looks likely to play Lancashire as they can’t play at OT because of the Test Match!
Comment by John L August 27, 2019 @ 8:27 pmThat would be fun. There was hardly anyone there on TV last night and that was for a Durham match. A quarter- final in front of 300? I probably won’t go …
Comment by pompeypop August 28, 2019 @ 5:48 amApparently Lancashire suggested postponing it to Old Trafford until 9 September (evening, floodlights). It might not be us of course but it will be a southern team – we play at the Ageas Bowl (at 10.30am) the day after, on 10 September!
It’s interesting that they are moving to Durham which is 130 miles north of Manchester. They need a ground with lights and neither Birmingham nor Yorkshire will qualify, so they could have moved 50 miles to Leeds or 90 miles to Edgbaston. It couldn’t be that they are seeking to inconvenience their opponents I suppose?
Comment by pompeypop August 28, 2019 @ 6:18 amI think it might be to do with their sponsors Emirates who have naming rights both for OT and Durham. Apparently Lancashire are paying to transport members and T20 members for free to Durham with free entry so expect there will be more there than last night!
Comment by John L August 28, 2019 @ 6:54 amGood point John – I suppose I was assuming that Lancashire members would prefer to watch a Test Match, but they were always the one-day ‘Kings’. Incidentally we’ve got a sparkling Emirates tower in Pompey, so they could play down here …
Comment by pompeypop August 28, 2019 @ 7:40 amThey could always play at Arsenal’s ground. It’s about the right size for T20 too!
Comment by James August 28, 2019 @ 11:25 amThat would suit Lancashire as they won the Lambert and Butler Cup played at football grounds around the country in 1981. (Stamford Bridge hosted the semis and final; Ashton Gate, Selhurst Park, The Hawthorns and Old Trafford had the qualifiers)
And that’s a good cue to ask Dave (or Tigger) to dig out the Hampshire score(s) from the Lambert and Butler competition. As far as I can tell they did not make the semi-finals so may have played only one match.
Comment by Hedgehog August 28, 2019 @ 1:13 pmHedgehog, I’m very happy for Tigger to take some well deserved glory on this one – but if not, I’ll do my best! Cheers.
PS Every summer at St Helen’s (seafront) when I was a kid, there was week long Portsmouth Cricket Festival – not the county’s week at the US Ground, but local representative sides, with a knock-out cup, the city council v Brighton’s, Hampshire Colts etc. One game every year was Portsmouth FC v the best of the local clubs. Pompey’s stars included Jimmy Dickinson (famous) and Harry Harris (maybe not so famous).
Comment by pompeypop August 28, 2019 @ 3:02 pmI found on Tigger’s site a list of “Other matches” which reveals that at Ashton Gate on Sept 17, 1981 Hampshire defeated Glamorgan (D R Turner bowling 3 balls only, and taking a hat-trick), and then lost to Somerset. These were 10-over games. It’s not clear whether they were aimed at a new cricket audience like The Hundred, but it is clear that the spectators didn’t show up and the idea was canned after one season.
Comment by Hedgehog August 28, 2019 @ 6:06 pmDavid Turner used to win our single wicket tournaments too. I don’t know why he didn’t bowl regularly,
